A/N: This is my first R&I fic and my first challenge fic. Enjoy.

Throughout her life Dr. Maura Isles never really celebrated Christmas. When Maura was a child her parents were always at dinner parties and charity events that prevented spending holidays with their only child. During college Maura spent her time studying for her next semester and didn't really care about the holidays. In her professional life Maura never got close to any of her coworkers to even consider spending time with them during the holidays so Maura decided to start volunteering so others could be happy during the holidays.

Even when she tried to celebrate, the annual office parties were always awkward and uncomfortable for Maura because she didn't have anyone to socialize with. But this year was different, this year Dr. Maura Isles had Detective Jane Rizzoli. When Jane found out that all Maura did was work on Christmas she decided to invite Maura over to experience a Rizzoli Christmas.

That was five hours ago.

They were currently setting up decorations at Jane's apartment when Maura broke the silence…

"Jane, I just…I wanted to let you know how much this means to me."

Jane was almost too busy complaining about the god awful holiday table settings she had to set out to please her mother to hear Maura's confession, luckily she caught the sudden whisper over the clanging of dishes and replied, ""Wha? Invitin' you over? No problem Maur."

"I…Never mind. Thanks Jane"

Jane caught the tone of voice Maura used and put the rest of the dishes down. In less than three seconds she was beside Maura, who was hanging tinsel on the Christmas tree, when she asked, "What's wrong Maura?"

Maura looked from the tinsel to Jane then to the tinsel again, "Did you know that tinsel was invented in Nuremberg, Germany and the surname originates from the old French word 'estincelle' or 'etincelle' which means 'spark' or 'glitter'. I'm sure you're also interested in knowing that-" Maura was abruptly stopped by Jane's patented 'Rizzoli Glare' as she continued but on her original and intended course, "Well…it's just this will be my first 'real' Christmas and…oh Jane you know I'm not good at expressing what I'm feeling!"

Jane simply smiled and took Maura by the shoulder and lead her to the couch where they both sat down, "Hey, isn't that my line?"

At that they both laughed. Jane looked at Maura and continued, "I know this will be your first 'real' Christmas, but you know my family loves you, plus I'll be with you the entire time so relax. I got your back; I'll always have your back Maur."

With that Jane Rizzoli wrapped her arms protectively around Maura Isles and kissed her forehead.

Maura sighed contently, "I've got your back too, Jane, forever and for always."

Maura snuggled into Jane as they sat there completely content, the decorations forgotten.
