Luna stepped out into the inky night. As she crossed the ancient balcony of her castle she thought of how lonely everything was now. Here sister had long since passed away, taking the bright sun with her.

Then, slowly, the stars began to die one by one. The world grew darker with the passage of time until only the moon remained. Then the few creatures of darkness that remained began to disappear.

Looking at the world now, at its dark and inhospitable lands, it's unrelenting cold and lifelessness, Luna was happy that the ponies of Equestria had lived in an era of sun and warmth and didn't survive long enough to see it die.

Luna heard movement behind her and knew that her friend had come tos tand with ehr. The creature took its place beside her.

"Hello Harmony," Luna said. She laughed inwardly at the irony of the dragon's name. Harmony, the last thing left in Equestria. She was small compared to the dragons of ages past, skinnier and more malnourished in appearance after ages of lifeless cold, but she still stood a full five feet above Luna. Her serpentine body snaked around and settled into a comfortable position.

"Hello, Luna," She said. "I can't explain how but... I just knew that it was time, that I had to be at your side."

Luna did no respond, and Harmony hesitated in prompting her. Finally, Luna said "I'm sorry, Harmony."

"For what?"

"That you had to live in this age of ice and darkness. There were so many things in this world...sunlight, warmth, laughter...ponies that fought, loved, and triumphed together. Music that could life your soul to its height or crush your heart completely. So many stories. so many memories. All the things you've never known. I'm sorry that you live to see this day."

"Luna. I do not regret my life. I have been happy here in this world and it's served me well. I thank the heavens for my life and that it was so blessed to be so close to yours."

Luna smiled sadly at Harmony, then lifted her gaze to the last remaining light of the sky, the moon.

Her beautiful world and all its history of splendor was ending. As she felt warm tears begin to fall from her eyes, she felt the moon as it weakly implored her not to cry and told her that all things must come to an end. It thanked her for the life she gave it and for all the things she'd done for the world. It forgave her all her trespasses as Night Mare Moon, as it had before, and Luna felt its life begin to fade.

She spread her great wings to the world before her in a final embrace.

"I will go with you Princess Luna," Harmony said. "I'll be your escort to the great beyond, and may we rejoice in the company of friends past and your reunion with your family."

The tips of Luna's wings began to glow with silver light, shimmering in the darkness. The tips of her feathers then began to turn to stardust, spreading from the tips of her wings and tail.

"Thank you Harmony." The dust blew away in a stream on the wind. "Goodbye, Equestria. You have lived well, and know that I have always loved you." At last she dissolved away, the last breath of the world carrying her away into the sky where the moon finally faded into blackness.

And thus Equestria was dark. All life extinguished, it fell into the black.
