A/N - Hello, Quick update!

This is a song-fic.(ish) The song in question is "Wish We Were" by Smoking Popes. The fic sort of weaves around the song so I recommend you look it up, because it really is a fantastic song. But, still, the story makes sense without it :)

This takes place in The Marauders and Lily's sixth year and is a companion piece to my multi-chaptered fic, Thrice Defied. But, you don't need to read it to understand this. It's just a suggestion. *wink wink*

For those avid fans of Thrice Defied, don't worry, a new chapter will be up tomorrow.

I know, I really am a pushy demanding writer! Sorry about that.

First Verse

James Potter is sitting in the Common Room pretending to do his homework when really he is watching Lily Evans.

She is standing in the far corner with her friends and they are laughing about something. He loves it when she laughs. Her whole face lights up and he can't help but notice how gorgeous she is. She flips her hair over her shoulder as she speaks animatedly to her friends. James has to stop himself from sighing. Her hair is so beautiful.

He wishes he could just run his hands through it.

Second Verse

Her features are so perfect that it makes James wonder if she was not once a statue; having been brought to life by a cruel wizard trying to torture him into insanity.

As she walks with her friends to the portrait hole she smiles at him and he feels his heart melt in his chest. Her hand waves goodbye to him and he raises his lamely in return.

He wishes he could hold her small petite hand in his large one and walk with her to lunch.

Chorus

She has made it perfectly clear that she has no romantic feelings for him.

He has been rejected by her so many times. Back then he was fearless, asked her out whenever he could. Now it's different. He has grown to have true, strong feelings for this woman. She is no longer just some childish game of chase. He had thought of her as such in his youth. How wrong he had been. He truly cares for her now.

He wishes she could see that.

Third Verse

Out on the grounds after lunch he sees her walking down the stone steps. The sun illuminates her pale face and her eyes shine brightly as her hair dances like fire down her back.

He raises his arm to get her attention, but she is already heading over to where her boyfriend stands with his friends. She looks up at him with those emerald eyes and James feels a dull empty feeling creeping up in his very soul.

He wishes she would look at him that way.

Chorus

If he were to tell her now how he feels for her, he would risk a lot more than his own pride.

Not only would he be left heartbroken, for the girl he loves doesn't love him, but he would also lose a very good friend. Because he and Lily are very close friends now. If she had to reject his feelings he thinks it would hurt her as well, for she will have let down a friend. And hurting Lily is the exact last thing he ever wants to do.

He wishes things were less complicated.

Fourth Verse

James dreams only of Lily that night.

Her dark red hair piled under his chin as she snuggles closer to his chest. He wraps his arms around her tighter and kisses the top of her head. He loves the feel of her warmth. He is brought back to the cold realization he is holding a pillow by his alarm, signaling the start of the new day.

He wishes she was really in his arms.

Chorus

He wishes they were going out.

A/N - I know it's sort of confusing if you've never heard the song.

But I hope it's not too angsty? I love the song and it's so upbeat that I would hate to bring it down that way.

I enjoy reviews, good or bad; helps with my personal growth, so let me know what you think! :)
