Schadenfreude
A Jean Havoc One-shot
Second Lieutenant Jean Havoc slammed the receiver down after he explained to his soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend that he can't keep her company tonight. The reason he told her: something came up in the office and he needs to work overtime. The real reason: Colonel Roy Mustang ordered him to do surveillance in an entrapment mission.
"That makes her the sixth."
She was the sixth to leave him due to work-related reasons. He had about seven other ex-girlfriends who left him for the Colonel because, as they said, the latter was cooler and wouldn't give them lung cancer.
He opened the glass doors of the public phone booth. A gust of cigarette smoke permeated into the open air.
It wasn't that he didn't know how to treat a woman right. When he once thought about it, all his love life woes pointed back to the Flame Alchemist. But what was laughable about the entire thing was that even though the Second Lieutenant had every right to hate his superior, he just couldn't.
Second Lieutenant Jean Havoc opened the doors to his superior's office. His co-staffers stood frozen as they watched the First Lieutenant lash out at the Colonel for procrastinating again. The Colonel merely sat in his chair scratching his head. The Second Lieutenant sat in his own chair, leaned back and propped his feet on top of his desk.
Indeed, he couldn't hate the Colonel. In fact, he had nothing but respect, because he knew that any man who can give his heart and be monogamous to a full-time, gun-wielding military officer and disciplinarian deserved nothing less.
In the end, Second Lieutenant Jean Havoc had the last laugh.
