NOTE: this is written from about the end of book two. The concept is one that I came up with ages ago, that follows on from Eldest. (parts of Brisingr and Inheritance may not occur)
Of the Wild
Prologue: The Beginning of the End
The clearing was dull. There was no breeze to stir leaves, lying in piles under the trees. No birds sang as they flew from branch to branch, silence drifted on the air. Clouds hung heavy in the air covering the sun and muting the green of the grass. The clearing seemed untouched by humans, bare but for a small bundle of cloth lying beside the river. The river itself flowed swiftly, its surface was deceptively smooth hiding the depth and speed of the current.
A shadow appeared in the water, growing larger before a head popped up, gasping for air. Long black hair was plastered to the figures face. Large brown eyes peer around the clearing with a look of comfort and familiarity as the girl caught her breath. soon her breathing returned to normal and the girl dived once more beneath the water, her shadow dimming as she descended.
Then, something went wrong, a misjudged current perhaps because the girls shadow disappears - swept away down the river.
The sun peers though a gap in the clouds, shining briefly with its full glory down upon the clearing. The girls head does not emerge again.
