Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter.

Seven-year-old Remus Lupin doesn't understand why his mum and dad wouldn't let him outside. He doesn't understand why his father kept a gun and silver bullets with him at all times. He doesn't understand why they were so worried during the full moon.

The only thing Remus Lupin understands was that tonight the moon was big and round and he wants to see it from outside, not from his bedroom window. He wants to run and play in his yard; wants to be outside till the stars came out with the other kids. But his mum always smiles sadly and says a quiet "not tonight sweetheart" before tucking him into his bed.

But tonight his father was here. Maybe he would let Remus go outside! Remus rushes into the hallway where his father is taking off his coat and boots.

"Daddy!" he cries and jumps into his father's arms.

"Remus!" His father picks him up and swings him in circles. "How are you today?"

"I'm good daddy," Remus says smiling and pulling on his father's hand, and leads him into the sitting room.

"I'm glad," Mr. Lupin says. He collapses on his favorite chair and pulls his sun onto his lap.

"Daddy, may I please go outside tonight?" Remus pleads, hope in his voice.

"We'll see son," his father says. He sets Remus on the chair and goes to the kitchen to find his wife.

Remus creeps towards the kitchen door to hear what his parents were talking about.

"I feel bad, he keeps asking to go outside," his father tells his mother.

"I don't see why you can't go with him, take a gun and a knife," his mother says.

"It's too dangerous. We don't know where Fenrir is! What if he finds us? Remus will be killed! We must wait until Fenrir is captured!"

"Who knows how long that will be!" his mother says. "Remus will never get to be a child, he could be in Hogwarts before Fenrir is found!"

"If it keeps him safe," Remus's father sounds tired. As Remus peers around the corner he sees him sit down at the table and his mother put a bowl of soup in front of him. "I just want to keep him safe."

"I know," she whispers. "And so do I. I shouldn't have said that. You're right. Fenrir could be anywhere, we can't let him near our little boy."

Remus doesn't know who this Fenrir man is, but he couldn't be that bad. He creeps away from the kitchen and towards the door that leads to the yard. He will only be outside for a second, and within running distance of the house. If anything happens surely he will be able to get inside.

Remus smiles widely as he smells the outside that he hadn't smelled in weeks. It smells so good. The clouds move and the full moon is revealed. Its light illuminates the yard, and Remus sees a flicker of movement. He begins to back away towards his house. An anguished howl splits the night, and Remus runs towards the door.

The werewolf pounces and pain flares in Remus's left shoulder. He cries out and his father comes running with his silver bullets. He fires the gun, but none of the bullets hit the mark. Fenrir Greyback backs into the woods, snarling.

The last thing Remus remembers are his mother's strong arms picking him up. His father places an arm on his mother's shoulder and turns on the spot. With a pop they arrive at St. Mungos, and young Remus is handed to a team of Healers. They work hard to save the boy, and he lives, but he is forever scarred.

Remus Lupin doesn't understand that it was a werewolf that bit him. He doesn't understand that he is now a werewolf, doomed to a night of agony once a month. He doesn't understand that his life was changed forever.
