'She wants to live.' Patrick smiled up at his two angels in the doorway. He still couldn't believe how lucky he'd been to have them as his family but the tragedy of the past hours made the blessing yet greater.
'With your arms around her who can blame her?' His wife grinned as she slipped into the room and closed the door behind her.
'She's almost the most beautiful baby girl I've ever seen. It's almost as if Mother Nature made up for her shortcomings by giving her extra beauty.'
'It's so hard to imagine what she's going to go through. My heart breaks to think what would have happened if that was Angela, she never would have made it to the society.'
'Ngla me!' Their daughter sprung to life as she raised her head from its drooped position.
'Yes darling we're talking about you and how much we love you.'
'Daddy baby.' She pointed at Susan, now beginning to drift off into the land of nod.
'That's baby Susan. She's poorly so Mummy and Daddy are looking after her.'
'Kiss better.'
'Okay.' Shelagh walked over to the desk and held her daughter just above the baby. Angela bent down and kissed Susan on the nose before patting her on the head and reaching out to her father who just about managed to juggle the two of them into a comfortable position.
'What are we going to do Patrick?' Shelagh perched on the edge of his desk. Only two years ago she wouldn't have dared to do it, even in the middle of the night when barely anyone was around to see it. Now, several near disasters later and with a miracle of a daughter later she didn't care what anybody thought, she only wanted to be close to the man she loved.
'What if her parents reject her? We can't let her live in a hospital and you've seen what it's like in some of the refuge homes. She'd be bullied into seclusion.'
'I won't let her get hurt. If, and this is a big if, she needs a home then I'm sure Angela would love to have a s-i-s-t-e-r. What's one more mouth to feed.'
'I'd definitely have to stop working, she'd need around the clock care for years. Although that would satisfy my need to help.'
'No point putting the cart before the horse. We'll see what tomorrow brings and we'll deal with it together.'
'I love you Patrick.'
'I love you too. And may I say what fetching attire you're sporting to work tonight.'
'Oh hush you.'
'Come here.' He handed baby Susan over to her and pulled her down into her lap.
When Sister Mary Cynthia found them hours later all four were deeply asleep. She backed out quietly and put the do not disturb sign on the office door. Not after taking a photo of course.
