Death is not something you can avoid. It is not kept neatly in hospitals,
disposed of like dirty Kleenex. You cannot just find a medicine to cure
it. You cannot run from it. From the moment you are born, you cannot
avoid death.
Death is set into our bones, much the same way life is. Where death eats away at our cells, life comes along and repairs the damage that death has done. But even in the daily struggle with death, sometimes life cannot come back and replace the cells that have died.
Life is prohibited in the brain. If cells die in the brain, they cannot be replaced. Such is the hold that death has over us. Death is our mortality. Without death that sets in the moment that we are conceived, we would live forever. We would basically be at a standstill.
Many conceive death as an ailment, one which must have a cure. These are the dreamers, those who do not have any reason whatsoever to think that life beyond the normal expectancy would be a bad thing.
However, if you talk to any of those who have outlived their families, they would say that it was a curse to be able to live longer than the people you love. To see everything you have ever known change and die, then turn hence to dust, would be the worst form of punishment imaginable.
This is the tale of a man that refused to die.
