The Roar of Aslan

Tumnus contemplates his reward (Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe).

When she mentioned his father, he looked away. She said her father was a soldier like him, too. In many ways, they were alike.

She liked tea, that's all that mattered. This was his way in, and soon he would have his reward.

A few minutes passed between them. She was so young, so innocent, so naïve. She knew nothing of the changes in Narnia since the last Daughter of Eve still lived.

She would know soon enough.

He picked up his flute and began to play. She didn't know the song, so she didn't know it was different. Her eyes drooped as he played on, coaxing her to watch the fire. At last, she fell asleep.

He smiled. He would finally get his reward.

The dancers in the fireplace disappeared, and Aslan roared.

He jumped back. Aslan would come soon, and he would defeat the White Witch.

Tumnus would get his reward soon, but now he wondered if it was the reward he wanted.
