And When the Sky Was Opened

Chapter One: Beginning

There were legends in that old world, before any Kingdom had sprung up from the water, before the flowers and the sea and even before the children ruled. These were legends of the faint film that covered the sky, the golden haze that encompassed reality and bore life onto such barren rocks. Small drops of sunlight, slips of dew or even tears – whatever they were, they were good, and from them mankind formed, each a small luminous being of pure sunlight.

The first were aware. They knew their existence was spun of gold, so tightly bound to the yellow orb suspended above them. From the Sun they took gifts of knowledge, of where to plant and how to build. Select few could look up to the sky and see them – the gods – and they knew their speech and imparted the secrets onto the world. These were placed above all others as Priestesses of the Sun, all blessed women, beautiful and eternally young. Under these mankind followed the path laid before them into a grand world of prosperity and peace.

However, as with all things, nothing could last under the flow of life. Mankind grew old and began to forget where they came from. The world grew so big that people began to understand the power of their own hands, began to fill with the importance of what they had accomplished. Even Priestesses could not warn strongly enough, and as sure as the rise of the Morning Sun, the gods grew weary of trying and slowly drifted away, leaving their creation behind, abandoning even the women, who started to dim and gray…

Hundreds of years ran through the earth.

There came a Kingdom, fresh and newly established but suffering the pains of being born, just as all the while the Queen lay in her bed, slowly dying onto the bed sheets.

There came a woman, aching under her skin for all the stories her mother had told her of glory and eternal youth, seeking something to save her, fearing all the while the end of her life which rapidly approached.

And then, in the midst of it all, came something from above, a single drop of sunlight or perhaps even, a tear.

Author's Notes: I never like to start a story with a creation myth but, oh well. I hope someone will stick around for the next chapter, which will jump to post-movie. Also wanted to credit the title, which is blatantly stolen from the Twilight Zone episode of the same name!
