The Letter

(BEING REWRITTEN 2/23/14)

Summary: Voldemort believes he has won. Rebellions remain however, the Ministry and the school are now his. Soon the whole of the wizarding world and all who opposed him would fall before him. Only one last task remained for the Dark Lord; to correct a mistake; a mistake that could either save or destroy him. After the Battle of Hogwarts.

My Dearest Hermione,

I write this letter, though I'm not sure if you'll ever read it for I have no known way to send it. The parchment and quill, I stole from one of my captors as they tortured me. If it is not perfectly clear, then let me make it so now. I AM ALIVE. I, Harry James Potter, am still alive, though I wish it wasn't so. They tell me you are dead. They tell me you died in the Battle of Hogwarts, but I know it not to be true. I know because I was there before the battle and I searched for you. I knew you would not return and yet I made myself believe that you would come back. When you said those things and left me in those woods, a part of me died. I waited so long for you to return that I almost lost sight of my journey. Ron's return was but a brief joy amongst the sorrow. His departure to search for you when I would not marked the end of my best mate's life. Just one more mistake in the life of Harry Potter. I do not seek your pity but forgiveness. I take full responsibility for my actions and have earned these shackles and chains. My wards live because I have failed. Live knowing you made the right decision when you left me. Everyone that stood with me died because of me. Dumbledore and the prophecy were wrong, for I survive and so does he. I will die here as I should. My life is spent. No more will die for me. I will not tell you to flee or hide for I know you will not. You owe the wizarding world nothing. Do not fight for them. Fight for yourself. The little ink I have is almost gone. Be safe, be strong. I will always be with you in spirit.
