Walking into the house to see Andy pointing a gun at him was not what he expected. It had been a long day at work, especially with Jo, and all he wanted to do was curl up with Andy and sleep. He could forget his troubles, forget his issues with Jo and just spend a relaxing evening with Andy.
Instead of upsetting her further, he decided to go with the 'light' route and started pulling his gun out of the holster saying "I'm going to take this out, real slow alright? I'm gonna put it down."
It had the effect that he wanted when she started giggling. She apologized and asked how his day was. She seemed interested until she said "yeah, Luke, um, what the hell is this?"
He froze and then tore his eyes from her, silently cursing. That ring had been for Jo, before Jo had broken his heart. He knew he should have gotten rid of it but he couldn't bring himself to do so.
After he met Andy, he thought he found happiness again. They moved into the house together and it was in one of his boxes. He told himself that when he unpacked he would go to the jeweler and trade in the ring so he could buy Andy a different one. And then, before he could unpack the box, Jo came back into his life and made it obvious that she wanted him back.
He knew he couldn't not answer her question. "Okay, this isn't exactly how I had this planned…" He gave her a whole elaborate way he planned to propose to her, all the while thinking about how Jo would react to this news because he knew Andy would say yes.
