Title: I know you're gone but…
Casey Novak was finishing placing the last of her belongings into the many boxes it had taken to clean out her office. Well, it actually wasn't hers anymore, She had been disbarred, and this office belonged to the new ADA, Kimberly Greylick. Casey taped up that last box, and took in a deep breath. She was going to miss this place, most of all the people, like the SVU squad. Casey hadn't want to see any of them after her disbarment, she was very much ashamed of what happened, and really didn't want be seen. Her co-workers had had a lot of respect for her, her voice was heard, and what she said mattered. Now however, that was all gone, and she was seen as a sleazy, cheating, prosecutor, that's how she felt anyway.
Casey picked up the last box and started to leave. She turned to take one last look at the office she was once proud of, when she turned around a familiar figure stood in her way.
"Leaving without saying goodbye?" Captain Cragen asked.
"I can't bare to face them." Casey answered blankly. Her face looked so sad, it nearly broke the Captain's heart. She hadn't been crying, but her face looked so depressed and lost. He wanted to do something to make her look like self-confident, strong, happy Casey Novak he knew.
"I'm ashamed of what I have done, I went against everything I believed was right, Don, and nothing to show for it. I can barely look at myself in the mirror, let alone the people who once had respect for me." Casey was close to tears now, and shoved past him to the doorway.
"Casey…" He called, and she stopped mid step. She turned around tears in her eyes, and just waited for him to say something.
"I didn't come here to talk about what you did. I came to say goodbye." He said.
"Goodbye Don," she said hurriedly and turned from him
"Casey." Stopped her again, he walked over too her, " I'm not here to judge, I just want to know if you need any help." Casey wiped the tears from her eyes, and collected herself.
"No, this is the last box, but thank you." She replied. She took a long good look at him, one of her first days on this job Don had come to see her at the batting cages. He asked her for a favor and told her something she had never forgotten, that they had to trust one another in order for the relationship between the DA's office and SVU to work. Its something she knew to be true now that she had broken that trust. Her guilty hit her hard now looking into his face, that memory seen to tare at her conscience.
"I'm sorry Don." She blurted out, " I don't know why I lied in court. I just felt like the bad guys always seem to win, and nothing we did made deference."
"You don't have to explain yourself, it really doesn't matter now." He said in a calming voice.
"Yes it does. I didn't believe that the detectives would get the evidence we needed, and I couldn't let him walk. So I had Warner lie. I'm so sorry I betrayed our trust." Casey breathed deeply to calm herself, it was horrible what she had done, but getting it out in the open seem to make her feel better. Casey was soon calm and collected again, " It's been a pleasure working with you Don. I hope all goes well for you in the future. Goodbye." And for an instance Don saw on Casey face that confident, happy look he new all to well, and he almost lost his composer enough to embrace her, but managed to get a hold of himself.
"Take care, Casey", He said, and she gave him a nod as she walked down the hall and out of his life. Don stood there in her empty office, and whisper to himself, " I know you're gone, Casey, But I still love you." He gave the room one last look, and went his own way knowing he probably wouldn't see her again.
