How Did We Even End Up Like This?
Howdy gang! Sorry for never updating my other story. I don't have a real excuse for it other than vacation, utter laziness and general writers block. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this quick drabble because it may end up costing me an A in Oceanography!
The Standard…I am NOT, I repeat NOT J.K.R. and if I were I would not have written such an odd piece.
Enjoy…a quick look into what I imagine as one of Lily and James's numerous fights.
Despite the similarity in title to the popular song, this is NOT a songfic!!
"Come ON Evans! That was a long time ago. I've changed!"
People had begun to crowd around. These epic arguments had become legendary in their time at Hogwarts and always turned out to be the equivalent of water cooler gossip in the subsequent days.
Glancing around nervously at the growing population, Lily instantly deflated.
"Give it up, Potter; we all know you haven't changed in the least. Take last week's incident for example…"
The sudden hush in the crowd followed by scattered murmuring proved that it wasn't only Potter who was casting his mind back to the 'incident'. Given his numerous professions of infatuation and constant stream of pickup lines to her it was an interesting scandal when HE was found snogging the daylights out of Abigail Hause (better known as Easy Abby to her fellow students).
"Lily…"
"Don't "Lily" me, Potter." She replied growing angrier. "You can't claim the psycho fangirl excuse on this one. I was there, I broke you both up and if I remember correctly it took quite a few shakes to get you both separated. Fine example, that, of your 'undying devotion'!".
The end of her scold brought on a furious expression from him.
"Don't even start with me about devotion, Lils-" She winced at the old nickname. "I've chased you for years on nothing but biting remarks!" He was getting furious now. "The ONE time-"
"ONE TIME MY ARSE, POTTER! If I remember correctly it was you who professed to LIKE me, dated me, then CHEATED on me 3 months later. Don't you EVER accuse me of exaggerating you prick!" By this time she was shaking with fury and not a little pain. Perhaps the scariest part however, was her tone. Most who knew her were aware that only when she was inconsolably furious would she use such a quiet, forceful, dangerous voice. Those who would recall the scene later would swear they saw a watery gleam in her eyes before she began rapidly blinking.
She soon tore her furious gaze away and a flash of surprise at their audience surfaced before she suddenly blanked her expression and brought her gaze back to Potter. If one had taken the time to watch Potter's face in that same time (as many of the fangirls did jubilantly) one may have been able to discern the unmistakable face of a person who had betrayed themselves and was still paying for it. Unfortunately, only his closest friends, the Marauders, did see it or at least would recognize it for what it was.
In a decidedly calm, collected and slightly cool voice, Lily gave one of her standard replies (#7 if Sirius remembered correctly).
"I am sorry to inform you that I am currently unable to acquiesce to your request*. Thank you for the offer and best of luck in finding a date." That being said, she breathed deeply, unclenched her fists, turned her back and after gathering her books from the cold, stone floor, slowly navigated her way through the crowd to the Common Room and ultimately her dorm room and bed.
What neither of them knew is that they were actually quite in sync with one another. This was proven by the fact that had they actually expressed it out loud, they would have despairingly said "How did we even end up like this?" simultaneously.
*:) sorry, I had to stick it in there! *Elizabeth Swan*
