April suppressed a laugh as she watched Donnie flit about his lab. From what April had pieced together of Donnie's exited rambling, he was working on a new invention that would allow them to breathe the Kraang's atmosphere.

Donnie would run across the room, rummage through boxes of spare parts, jot some things down on lose papers, run back across the room to his work station, and start soldering wires together. He was so busy, April was a bit surprised when he looked up and acknowledged her. "Hey April," he called, "come check this out." His gap toothed grin was so big, April was worried his face might break in half.

April joined him at his desk and cast her eyes over the small mechanism, "How's it work?" She inquired.

Donnie picked up one of the devices and showed her the innards "A filtration component in one end, and a dispelling unit in the other." He looked admirably at his work, he turned his ever loving gaze up to April, "I put the schematics over there, if you want to have a look."

April picked up the blueprints and began to assess them. "Hey, Donnie," April called over her shoulder, "how are you going to replenish the oxygen in the air, after you filter out the toxins?"

April turned around and was met with the Don's grim face. "I didn't think of that." Donnie looked so dejected that April found herself putting her arms around him and apologizing, although, she didn't know exactly what she was apologizing for.

Donnie took the blueprints to his desk, tapped at the keyboard a bit, looked over the parts in front of him, and then tapped at the keyboard again. After a while, Donnie suddenly perked up again, ran across the room, and promptly began digging through a large box. April had just reached Donnie when he jumped up and shouted, "Ah-ha!" He then tore off, back to his desk. April watched as Donnie attached tubes to either side of the new part, and then connected one end of the tube to his original machine.

Donnie spun around in his chair and presented the finished product to April. "It's from an old inhaler we kept around for emergencies." Donnie began his explanation, "It's going to hold, maintain, and ultimately manufacture breathable air, then release it in appropriate intervals."

April felt the corners of her mouth tug into a smile, she loved seeing him like this.

She loved watching him get excited over the strange little details of his latest ideas. She loved the way his eyes roamed through books, drinking in the words, internalizing their meaning. She loved his enthusiasm upon finding something new he wanted to study and explore. She loved his passion for all things intellectual. She loved his unquenchable thirst for answers.

She loved Donnie.

It wasn't a romantic attraction though, but it was an attraction. April had thought about this before, maybe it was their energies that were attracted. Maybe they were meant to be together, not as a couple, but as something more. An unstoppable force of intellect and power combined. Yes, together they could save the world, as friends.
