Castle's lifeless body was just lying there, blood pooling around him. "Get her out of here, bro." Ryan shouted at Espo, still crouched by Castle's side, trying do do anything he could.
Espo picked Kate. Through kicks, punches, screams, and cries, he carried her out of the building, away from the scene. "No, Castle! Espo, put me down. Please, please, you don't know how much he means to me."
Back in the building, Ryan held back his cries as he felt for a pulse. It was done, he was gone. Castle was dead. He was dead all because of a man with a gun. Not even a cop, and he was protecting the city, all because he liked doing it. He had no civil duty, and yet he felt he did.
That day, the world lost more than a writer. They lost a brother, they lost a best friend, they lost a partner, they lost a son, they lost a father, and they lost a husband.
He came out of the building, his eyes down. He couldn't look at her.
"Ryan?"
His hand was shaking as he opened his hand and placed Castle's wedding band in her palm.
"No, please, please no." She was sobbing, her knees buckling. She fell to the cement, clutching the ring in her hands.
"I'm so sorry." Ryan was about to break down into tears.
She was desperate. "Please, Ryan, please bring him back."
"I'm sorry, there's nothing I can do." And then, along with their sister, Ryan and Espo broke down, realizing they would never see their brother again.
Later on that day, she was back at the loft. She laid on the couch crying, her father there with her. "Please daddy, bring him back."
"I'm so sorry Katie, he's gone." His heart broke for his daughter. She shouldn't have to experience this again.
"He can't be, I love him."
"I'm sorry, sweetie." He hugged her from where she was.
"There has to be something, I need him," She couldn't grasp reality yet.
"I know, I'm so sorry."
