Twisted Logic

Another year has passed, yet he was unsure of his existence. He celebrated his birthday twice this year. He was unlike a normal person. He just turned 18, but he is still 8 years old. It was as if he had two different realities that coexisted in the same universe.

He remembered Haibara's warning earlier, after he swallowed that incomplete drug. He only had 24 hours to make things right. The experimental antidote wasn't perfect. It had adverse side effects, including death.

He had to take his chances. She has to know.

He was afraid of what might happen. Things changed and only change had the consistency that defied time. It was absolute, perfectly inevitable.

He wondered, "what if…" but he didn't dare continue.

He knew the consequences. He was smart enough to hide the pain he felt, but he could never be enough to save her from the tears that were sure to fall because of him.

He glanced at her.

'Will she ever know?' He closed his eyes and recalled each and every moment he spent with her.

He had countless other questions, but the answers were forgotten when their eyes met. He was certain of everything and anything.

He knew, now more than ever, that he felt it whenever she smiled, talked, every time she searched his eyes for the truth.

He was running out of time. He wanted to let her know how much she meant to him with his own voice, in his own body. After this, he might never have another chance.

"Please wait for me, Ran," he whispered. She smiled serenely.

"Why should I do that?" she teased.

He waked closer and wrapped his arms around her. He pulled her closer.

"Why do you think?" he breathed, his voice audible only to her. She felt him smile.

"What do you think have I been doing all this time?" she asked. "Am I not waiting for you to the point of madness? I'm-"

She never finished her sentence. He planted a kiss on her forehead. She was too stunned to continue. All her thoughts evaporated, but she knew better.

"Don't worry," he assured her. "You're the only one."

He looked at her straight in the eye.

"You have always been the one."

And in that moment, his realities finally collided, leaving him with the truth he searched for. It was nothing like he ever imagined, yet it was more than he wished for.
