Wondering

by Anna-Morgause

Desc: Finnick lets his mind wander. Drabble.

Sometimes, Finnick wonders. He knows better than to wonder, but he does anyway and the most frequent subject of his wondering is Katniss Everdeen. The girl herself - because that's what she is, technically, a girl. It's too dangerous for Finnick to think of her as a woman - isn't particularly charismatic, but there's something about her. It's not her looks because, even though she's still quite pretty without the masterful work of her prep team, her features aren't exotic and in fact, they're common in District 12. Or they were. She doesn't have a way with words or an inviting personality and lying doesn't come easy to Katniss, even though she masters it, more or less, with time and practice. Still, the twice reaped tribute captures Finnick's imagination just like she has with the rest of Panem, (either as a hunger games victor, or as the mockingjay but she is neither to him).

Finnick wonders if he'd never had his Annie (because having her and then losing her is too painful to even imagine), how he'd be able to stay sane. Could Katniss keep him sane? Would he be able to stay sane long enough for her to help him? They could help each other, Finnick is sure of it, but he has his Annie, who means more to him than anything, and she has her Peeta, who means more to her than she'll probably ever know. But what if there were no Annie and no Peeta, he wonders? How would he fair against that handsome "cousin", Finnick wonders. Pretty well, he imagines. Just by living in Panem, Gale has probably seen and experienced more than his fair share of awful things, but he'd never be able to relate to Katniss after she won the Games - and she always wins, in each of Finnick's mental scenarios. No, only someone who'd been in the arena, who'd seen the type of horror Katniss had seen firsthand, could understand her, could console her guilty heart. Finnick wonders if he could be that someone. He could, he decides, if she didn't already have that someone and neither did he. If there were no Annie or Peeta. They could keep each other from falling apart or into the warm embrace of morphling or alcohol and be the type of dysfunctional happy that victors can only only dream of, if they aren't having nightmares.

But there is an Annie - for which Finnick is eternally grateful - and there is a Peeta and all of Finnick's wonderings are pointless. They're just ideas that float through his head when he doesn't have to focus on being the great, handsome Finnick Odair. Still, he wonders.

What would their children look like...?

A/N: I've never written anything THG-related before, so, sorry if it's not the best.
