summary: a chance meeting.. and a promise to one self. [seto/??][minor shounen ai][one-shot]
-------
It was during the wee hours of the morning when he couldn't sleep. He never knew when he had acquired this new habit, but it clung to him after the second time or so. It wasn't anything special in particular, or that he found it especically enjoyful. No, he wasn't quite sure why he continued to do this.
But it was during one of these 'outings', when he had enough of staring at the glowing computer screen and was too weary to be in his house that he 'acquired' the taste of this certain habit. He didn't walk to any particular place, only places close enough and not to bothersome to go to. But as he stepped out into the fresh air, he found himself taking a deep breathe and walk in the direction of the Domino City Park.
He knew it was during these hours no-one in their right state of mind would be awake and active. But somehow, when he made it into the park where the trees cluttered enough so that someone could very well hide within, he had a feeling he was being watched. Or was doing the watching. It didn't matter.
"Couldn't sleep?" the one watching (or was he being watched?) would ask. The texture of the voice was a little husky, and he knew it was a male. And the voice sounded familiar, but he couldn't quite make out who it was. "Yes." he would reply, leaning on another tree from the opposite side. And that was their first meeting. More occured, and then they began to talk more frequently. On anything really-- schoolwork, their jobs, their family, anything that crossed their mind. He spent hours this way, beneath a tree listening to a comforting familiar voice that would speak his mind. Sometimes, he wondered if he came just because he wanted to hear this man talk. He dismissed this idea quickly.
Then he would stare hard into the branches, hoping to catch sight of something familiar. He would do so everytime he came, and he asked himself why he just didn't walk in there, and find out once and for all.
And then a little voice would say, because that would make things complicated. Because if you find out who it was, you may not be able to trust this person anymore. Trust? Was he beginning to trust a complete stranger? Oh, but he was far from being a stranger. the little voice would tease.
But he would always be there, come hell or high water. He wondered once, if that man lived there, and was actually some homeless guy with a can of philosophy. He dismissed this idea quickly as well.
But it was another time that this happened. It was always around the same hour that he would go, but this once, he saw the blonde-haired mutt walk inside the park, and didn't come out. Of course, he being who he was, and putting two and two together, he rationalized. The park is a public place. The mutt probably got kicked out of his damned house. That was all. It was then he deemed himself a damn as good a liar as he was a duelist.
But he went there anyways. They talked liked they always do-- this time it was about pets. And oddly, when he had mentioned of Mokuba desiring a puppy, the man could be heard hissing back a sigh.
They covered other things as well. But it was when the man said good-night and turned to leave, the wind blew away leaves to reveal a mass of blonde hair from the retreating figure. He wasn't quite sure what to make of that.
But that didn't matter. Because it was during the whee hours of the night.. when no one was awake, and this was a secret. Kaiba Seto promised to himself to keep it that way.
