"The Silver Daisy"

02/03/07

They came together awkwardly, two young people unsure of how to voice their affections. Their kiss was brief, and they separated quickly, in sudden embarrassment. Their cheeks flushed, and they looked away from each other.

He was too far away to hear their bashful mumbles, but he could see their furtive glances, the way he tugged on his collar, the way she drove her toe into the dirt. They were so young, so innocent, blushing as if they had just committed a sinful act…an act of spontaneity, not love or lust or duty or any of the things that could spur a kiss.

The person, hidden from their unsuspecting eyes, sat cloaked in shadows, watching them depart. His eyes were fixed on the girl – her eyes masked with confusion, but her face plainly joyful. So deeply had he longed to be with her…only to lose her. But her aura was mysteriously comforting, her intelligence undefined.

His calloused hand closed gently around the flower's stem. The flower meant for her. Swiftly, he plucked away a silver bud…then another, and another, another; until all that he had left was a lone jewel, adorned by the sunshine's complimenting rays.

"She loves me not," he whispered, and drew away the last petal.
