and, for those of you who don't know (I'm assuming most of you do, but still ...) Frank is Kirk's stepfather (or possibly uncle?) in the new movie. Yeah, the one who was calling him on the phone when he was driving the car.

He felt a wave of shock go through Jim, and a split second later understood why. The man coming towards them loooked familiar, thogh he knew that they had never met. It took Spock all of 2.13 seconds to realize that he had seen the man before only once when they had mind melded - a brief immage, clouded by pain - physical pain, and fear, and the words "you'll never belong anywhere boy. You know why? Because you're totally and completley worthless." Even years after Jim had last seen Frank, he still felt Jim's anxiety and upset through the mental link they shared. He sent his T'hy'la love and reassurance through the link as the man approached them.

"Jimmy! " Spock felt Jim cringe, and knew how desperatley Jim wanted to leave. Spock would have prefered to avoid him as well, but Frank had seen them first, making the encounter inevitable.

"Frank." Jim's voice was cold, flat. Spock could feel Jim's agitation, his worry. Worry about what Frank would do or say - to the both of them. He could tell Jim's thoughts were reeling and knew Jim was flashing back to the almost constant barrage of emotional, and often physical abuse that Frank had unleashed. And, there was something about the man that told Spock he was looking for another oppurtunity to hurt the one he loved.

"I heard you were the captain of the Enterprise now, and that you were coming back to earth for repairs. I tried to contact you, but there was no answer to my communication." Spock schooled his face into impassivness at that. He knew Jim had asked Uhura to ignore any communications that came from Frank. "Anyways," Frank continued "you're here now. So tell, me how does a wor ..." As he was speaking, Frank extended his hand towards Jim. Spock took the oppurtunity, and swatted it away, gripping Frank's forearm with enough force that it would leave bruises.

"You will not lay a hand on him" Spock's eyes bored into Frank's. Frank opened his mouth to say something, but Spock didn't give him a chance. "Furthermore you will not speak to him. You will turn around, go back the way you came and never contact him again." Spock maintained eye contact, which only seemed to infuriate Frank.

"And if I don't go?"

"Trust me, you would find the consequences of not following my instructions most ..." Without so much as a change in his facial expression, Spock tightened his grip enough to inflict acute pain "unpleasant." After a long moment, Spock released Frank's arm and made an attempt to put himself between Frank and Jim. Jim managed to cut him off before that happened, however. Frank simply glared at Spock, turned around with a huff and walked away, his shoulders set in anger as he turned down the side street.
