Disclaimer: I don't own any of the characters except for the ones I made
up.
"Mommy is leaving today to round up a group of bandits with the Lioness. I
would love to be like her, going around the realm and helping my people. I
would love to be a knight just like Aunty Alanna."
A knock on the door by Scott, one of the palace servants brought me back to
reality.
"Your Highness, His Majesty wishes to speak with you in the grand study," he said
with an elegant bow and left.
Princess Kalasin of Tortall, known as Kally to her family and friends was on her
Way, wondering why the king sent for her.
As she entered the marvelously decorated room, she sat on a seat in front of
her father.
"Kally, you're almost ten years old and have many ambitions, one of them is going for your knighthood. It's a wonderful choice, my dear but are you sure that's what you want to do?"
"Of course that's what I want to do Daddy," replied Kally with a grin which belongs to dreamers, "I've been dreaming about this my whole life. Look at the Lioness, she put her mind to it and she did it, I can too."
King Jonathan had a hurt and worried look on his face, thinking of the best words he could say.
"A princess has many duties, to her realm and her people and to her family. Sorry, dear but think about this. We want you to have a respectable marriage with a fine prince and become a queen which is good to her people and .."
"Daddy, please.. you know I want to become a knight, a hero just like Mommy and Aunty Alanna. Mommy's a queen, she's good to her family, friends and her realm and she battles bandits for her realm. Everyone loves her. Daddy, that's what I want to be when I grow up," replied Kally, clearly angry with her father.
"Kalasin, you're a princess, your duties are to the palace, you give orders to the knights and soldiers. You could become a great mage, study in the university or become a beautiful woman at court r a scholar. Many Kings won't want their sons to marry a knight would they? I'm thinking about your future, that's all. If you really want to help your realm, you can help by getting a good marriage and education which would keep Tortall respected through out the lands," he replies with his gentle smile, "Off you go."
Kally trotted back to her room, clearly confused, she really wanted to become a knight, but what the king said was important as well. Why is life so confusing?
Another knock on the door made Kally come back to her senses.
"Kally, I'm leaving soon, I just wanted to say good-bye," that beautiful voice can only belong to Queen Thayet.
"Sure, come in Mommy," she got up and walked over to the door.
"Wait a minute," remembered Thayet, "There's still a while before I leave."
"What do you think about me becoming a knight? I'm great with swords, I can ride well and shoot really well," questioned Kally.
"Kally, sure if that's what you really want, I say go for it. I bet your father said something," said Thayet with a suspicious look and a hand on her hip.
"Kally, we'll have to talk about this after I get back which gives you sometime to think about this."
Kally gave her mother a hug before Thayer exited through the door.
I need someone else's opinion, how about Roald? He's a page, he should know how it is. I'll ask him.
