Snow
It is the January of 1982, and it is snowing.
Draco has never seen snow before. He babbles happily, crawling over to the balcony windows. Narcissa watches him, eyes lit with fascination at every movement he made.
Draco pulls himself up by the bars of the window, standing unsteadily for a moment. Lucius could see that his wife has stopped breathing.
He falls with a harmless thump, and Narcissa leaps to him before he can even register what has happened. She lifts him carefully, cuddling him. She catches Lucius' eyes and gives him a weak smile.
She steps outside, letting a cold draft swirl into the room at the disappearance and Lucius wonders what his life would have been like without her.
He follows her out, her back is turned to him; Draco held tightly to her.
The child laughs as a flake lands on his hand; surprised by the sudden chill. She turns and smiles at the sound. It is a real smile. Lucius hasn't seen that smile since Draco was born.
Lucius looks past her. The lawns stretch past her. All is white and crisp and new...again. One can't see what lurks underneath. The dark and dirty is hidden. The sharp trees are blurred, softened with pillows of snow, resting on each branch.
Unconsciously, he hand raise to the touch his arm. He quickly comes to his senses, pulls away and glances at Narcissa. She is oblivious, still wrapped up in the child.
Lucius moves closer, enveloping her and the child in his arms. Her slender fingers caress his cheek, a quick stroke. He buries his face in her shoulder and feels the soft beat at her neck.
A dire thought comes to his mind, the snow will melt. And the dirt will show. And it will be grey and dismal.
He looks at his wife. She turns and smiles and he can forget. All is white and pure and new...again.
But still, spring will come and no one will need to hide...
If people know their timelines, this is set 3 months after the Death of the potters, i.e. people (Lucius) believe that Voldemort is gone and they can pick up their lives again.
