News of Cloudpaw's warrior ceremony spread though the ThunderClan camp as quick as a flash of lightning. As the Clan started to congregate around the Highrock I felt a few tears of joy ran down my tabby fur.
"Bindleface?" a small voice at my side asked.
I looked down and saw Whitestorm's slender tortoiseshell-and-white she-daughter Sorrelkit look up at me with her amber eyes. I purred with amusement. "Hello Sorrelkit " I looked over to the fonrt of the nursery where Willowpelt and Goldenflower were explaining to the other kits- Bramblekit, Tawnykit, and Sorrelkit's brothers Rainkit and Sootkit what was going on. "Are you excited to watch you first ceremony?"
She nodded. "Fink Sos. Why are you tearwy?"
I'm just so happy for my foster son."
"what fosta means?"
I chuckled at her kit like Innosence. "It means that I wasn't his birth mother but I raised him alongside Ashpaw and Fernpaw so he is like my son."
"Oh… what happened to his momma?"
"She…doesn't live in the forrest. " I explained. "She's Fireheart's sister and lives with Twolegs."
"Whys?"
I shrugged my shoulders. "It's the life she knows."
Whitestorm's scent wafted over to me as he walked over to us. Sorrelkit purred with delight and wound her way around her father's front paws. "She's not troubling you is she Brindleface?" the white warrior asked me.
I shook my head. "No. She's not – just asking me about Cloudpaw's mother."
My eyes met his and he understood that I hadn't told her about Cloudpaw being a kittypet. "Ah. I see. " His whiskers twitched in amusement. " You were a good foster mother to that lad. "
"Welll, I remember how warmly Robinwing accepted you into our family so I thought about what she taught me. "
"So you're my fosta auntie?" The kit asked.
Whitestorm and I chuckled. "I guess you can say that sweetheart. " he smiled at his daughter. "Though it was really your great-aunt Bluestar who raised me. "
"Im related ta Boostar?" he ember eyes went wide as if the idea was strange. "look! It's starting." He mewed as Cloudpaw came out of the elders' den.
My eyes never left him during the ceremony. As Cloudtail received his warrior heart swelled up with pride and warmth. I felt like I could run all the way to Highstones shouting the joyful news. He may not have been my flesh and blood son but I was the only mother he grew up. I loved him as any mother should, watched him scuffle with Fernpaw and Ashpaw in the nursery and observed as he fell hard for Brightpaw. I did not care about his origins when my sister Frostfur brought him to me as a tiny mewling kit. I was one of the few cats who saw past his roots when he first arrived and saw a tiny kit that needed a mother's love, milk, nurturing and kindness. Though he would never replace my young sons Tulipkit and Elderkit who were too sill to fight the greencough that took them to StarClan I had more than enough room in my heart to make room for Cloudtail.
I couldn't be any prouder of him and I was the first to yowl out his new name.
