EVERY MORNING
By Pedellea

He awakes, and for that fleeting second, nothing is wrong. Today, Dean and him will –

Then Sam opens his eyes and blinks simply, feeling the invisible knife make that agonizing twist in his gut.

There is no more Dean.

The raw, cold ache finds its crater-home in his heart soon after.

The same feelings, every morning.

Autopilot takes over, and he rolls out of bed, brushes his teeth, smoothes the bedspread, and spends the morning pouring over his maps, desperate to find that damned thing that took –

God. It's been how long? Near one hundred days, now? One hundred brand new days of repeated misery, just like the one hundred repeated days of misery before.

Why...

Couldn't...

He...

Sam sighs shakily.

He just wants to wake up.

That longing haunts him for the rest of the day, and everything else blends and blurs together. A killing here, a bullet wound there. What's the difference anymore?

Then, he's in bed again, exhausted out of his skull, but dreading to close his eyes, only to wake to what every morning now brings. The hole in his heart swallows him whole, and for a moment, his whole body shakes.

But, the hope for change – that awful, taunting, sublime hope - is what drags him to sleep.

Then, he awakes, and for that fleeting second, nothing is wrong. Today, Dean and him will –

Oh, god.

The blink.

The knife.

The realization.

The ache.

All find their places in perfect clockwork.

The same feelings, every single morning.
