Just another day
-before it all
-by Luciole Loong

Wufei sat on the grass with his specs and a book on his lap. It was a clear day, the birds singing and the sun shining and all that. He began to read.
In the distance he could hear laughter and shouts. He smiled. It was the kind of day he liked.
A little dog trotted past him, and his young cousin followed it. She waved to him, he smiled at her.
He wished it was always like this. Peaceful. Calming. When life seemed... full.
In the distance he could hear Meiran's voice, mocking him about being a nerd or something. He ignored her, as usual. He was not going to let her spoil his day.
A bird perched on the tree right above him, its songs clear and bright. Cautiously, he shifted his position.
A tiny series of tweets made him look up again. Up above the tree, at about the highest branch, he noticed a nest. He moved away. Its not a good idea to mess with mother birds. They attack like crazy.
He watched the bird fly away, and the tweets quietened down again. He put down his book and started to climb up the tree.
He coul hear someone yelling and laughing at him. Meiran, no doubt. He ignored her, and continued climbing. A firm grip here... this branch seems steady enough... UP...
And at the nest cuddled the most adorable things he's ever seen. He looked around nervously for any signs of their mother, then he tried to pat them. Their eyes are still blind, there's another egg unhatched, and their cries, thinking that he is their mother, were adorably sweet.
One of them bit his finger. "Ow." he said.
He looked around again, in case anyone else sees him in this undignified position. No one. Even Meiran had lost interest in him, and is practising highkicks whatever in the distance.
When he looked back at the nest, the last egg shuddered.
Waiting for it to hatch, he thought about the nest. What if it rains? Won't they die? Maybe these big leaves around would shelter them. It certainly is very shady up here. Anyway their mother will protect them. No harm would come to them.
He looked around nervously again. Their mother is still out of sight... good.
He looked back at the nest. To his horror he noticed that the other baby birds were pushing the newly hatched out the nest.
"Hey-" He began, but then he noticed their mother flying back, but it did not notice a ponytailed kid that's trying to break the wonderful cycle of natural subling's competition....
Hurriedly he tried to climb back down, and wondered how Meiran would laugh to death if she caught him being attacked by a sparrow.
In his clumsiness, he lost his footing and fell heavily on his butt. At the same time, a little baby bird fell also and landed neatly in his breastpocket.
Wufei blinked.
In his pocket, the chick went: "Tweak?"
"Hey moron, its time to go!" Meiran called out to him.
Patting the chick in his pocket and picking up his book, Wufei looked up at the nest again, and started to walk home.
