Alright. That's it. He thinks I've forgotten doesn't he? He thinks that the long years have worn down my sense of cognitive ability. Well, he's wrong! I'm not going to let him win again.
I'll just stare over at him, put on my best chess face. Look at him. He's so smug. Thinking that just because he can read minds, that he's going to beat me. Again. Well, I won't allow it. I'm almost unbeaten against everyone else, and there's no way that I'm letting this cue-ball - no matter how much of an old friend he is - beat me.
Ok. Good first move. He's trying to check mate me in three moves again. Well, I learned from last time. I've been practising you see. He thinks that I've been skulking around in my hideout, thinking up evil schemes. How wrong he is! I've been practising. Honing my technique against my compatriots. Well, all work and no play makes Erik a dull mutant. Of course, Mortimer never stood a chance. I wasn't even going to risk playing Victor. Talk about a bad loser... Last time Mortimer playing him at Twister, the poor frog ended up hiding on the ceiling for four weeks with a broken nose. And Raven can't stand to see a Monopoly board after what he did with one...
But Raven. She has a good brain on her. And I beat her! Seven times! I just had a slow start. That was all. So what if she won the first six games? I came back in the end. Even so, she didn't seem too upset about it. She had this weird smile on her face. Almost like she was happy that I'd won.
Right. I'll just move my Knight there and stop him from check-mating me. Ah-hah!! Didn't think of that, did you? Lets see what you do with that, you bald fr...
Oh hell. I should have thought of that. Why didn't I think of that? Damn you Charles!!
Right... I'll just...
No. I can't, cause he'll...
Right... So, I'll...
Ok. I can't do that either. Think damnit!
Ah-hah! I'll just move this here. He'll move his Rook over there to block his Queen, and then I'll just sail on in with my...
Where did that Bishop come from?! Oh wait. It was there all along!! Aaargh! Just think calmly Erik. No. Stop your eyes from looking over at those metal chairs over there. Yes, Charles would look better with one through his skull, but now is not the time for that. It's Christmas. Good Will to all men. Even if they are...
WHAT?! How can he have check-mated me from there!? I didn't even notice that Queen move! Let me just look him in the eyes.
Has he been cheating?
Oh no. Wait. That's just me and my wishful thinking. Can I move there?
No.
How about there?
No.
Could I possibly move my Pawn to...
No.
I hate him. I really hate him. Every year we get together for this game. And every year he leads me into a false sense of security. and then wins.
Well, I'll show him. He won't get away with this unpunished. I'll just have to use that machine...
Yes. That'll work.
The machine that I've had Mortimer painting for three months. Then he'll see. If I turn everyone into mutants, then maybe he'll have a rival in the chess-playing world. Then. Maybe HE'LL know what it's like to lose again, and again.
And I've lost again.
Oh you can sit there Charles, grinning like a Cheshire Cat. But you won't be smiling for long. You see, I've been plotting for some time now - just waiting for the right moment to strike. A real life game of chess if you like.
And I know that you're not as willing to sacrifice your pawns in real life...
