Don't Let The Music Fade Away'Another day, another case solved,' thought Booth, as he and Brennan sat side by side in his FBI issued vehicle. They'd both just finished a case that, for once, seemed like a rather straight forward homicide, and they were both enjoying the ride to their end of case ritual – dinner at the Royal Diner.
After a long enough silence for Booth, he turned on the radio. Silence wasn't really his thing. "Highway To Hell" came blasting through the speakers and Booth smiled sheepishly at Brennan, who just rolled her eyes.
"You know," she started, "Listening to music at that volume is really going to damage your hearing. If you listen to music over 80…" shouting over the music.
"Yes, thanks Bones, I know. It's the same old schtick from you."
"Its not schtick Booth. Its scientifically proven that…"
"Ok Bones. I'll turn it down. Better?" he asked. At Bones' nod, he thought he'd probably better change the station to a more Brennan-friendly one. After surfing a couple of channels, he found one he knew she'd like, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper. Booth broke out his charm smile and started to sing along in the hopes of Brennan joining in. But as Booth looked over at Brennan, she was looking away and if he wasn't mistaken, slightly upset.
"Bones?" he asked.
"Yeah?" came the reply, still in a world of her own.
"You love this song! Come on sing with me."
"No."
"Why not?" Don't be such a spoil sport. Have some fun once in a while, its not going to kill you," Booth said.
Brennan just turned to look at him as he pulled into the Diner car park. "What?" he asked.
Brennan just left him in his seat as she walked in the diner and ordered her usual. Booth tailed her and did the same. At their table, Booth asked again, "What Bones? I only wanted you to have some fun. You sang it before in front of more people than just me. What's wrong?"
"Booth," Brennan replied angrily, "The last time I sang that song, someone nearly did die remember, it was you!"
"Yeah I remember Bones. Kinda hard not to. But that doesn't mean its going to happen again."
"I don't care. I never want to hear that song again."
"Bones. You can't forget about a song because of that. Its one of the few happy things about your childhood and your mother that you remember. It brings back good memories, don't let these new ones let you lose that. Don't throw it away because of that."
Brennan looked at Booth and said, "I already have," and got up and walked to the door. Just before she walked out, she looked back and said, "It worked with Foreigner too." Then she was gone.
As Booth sat at their table alone, he started to realise just how much of Brennan he still didn't see and comfort. A partnership means sharing things and that meant he had to help her. He wasn't going to let her give up pieces of herself again.
