Jonas awoke with a feeling of disappointment and hope
"A dream,"he said with disappointment, "it was only a dream." Jonas had found himself lying on the cold snow, when he looked over he saw Gabriel, also asleep. "Wake up Gabe," he said with a happy and hope full voice, "Gabe, we have to keep moving, we have to get to Elsewhere, I know that it's there, I know there is something is waiting for us, something good.
Gabriel opened his small eyes. He began to shiver as the cold snow and air hit him.
"I know it's cold Gabe," said Jonas, "but don't worry, when we get Elsewhere we will have a better life then we would in the community." Jonas knew this was true, but he was not sure if he should of left, he was not sure if him and Gabriel would starve to death, of freezes to death before they even got there. Jonas picked up Gabriel, put him in the child seat of the bike, and begin to ride. The rode was covered in snow, ice, and rocks making it hard for Jonas to ride. Even though he couldn't wait to get to elsewhere, Jonas
rode slowly, remembering when he fell, and twisted his alcal. However even if he had bin riding at one mile per hour he would not of been able to stop in time for this. Wail Jonas was riding; he hit a rock, and fell. As Jonas fell he grabbed Gabriel, making sure he did not get hurt. Jonas, Gabriel and the bike sled down the hill running into sharp rocks on the way. They finally hit the bottom of the hill; Jonas had broken his arm, and his ankle. Jonas looked over at Gabriel, he was fine for the most part however, he had some cuts and burses on him, and he began to cry. Jonas picked Gabriel and crawled under a tree.
"I wonder how the community is doing right now." Jonas said allowed.
Unforchnaly, The community was not going any better then Jonas and Gabriel, all the memories Jonas had entered the community, death, illness, lost, and many other horrible memories surrounded them. People began to panic. The Giver tried to help them, tried to guide them the way he had for Jonas and Rosemary, however no one lessened. People were steeling from others, other people were dieing, and others put themselves up for release. Most people had given up hope now, all except one, Fiona. Fiona laid on the ground clutching her stomach, as she slowly starved to death. With her last ounce of strength, she sat up
"Jonas," she said aloud, as though he were there next to her, as though he could hear her, "Jonas, please come back, please. We need you." With that she fell back down, she closed her eyes, and knew she would never open them again.
Jonas now knew he would not make it, nor would Gabriel. He knew that they would die. He only hoped that his mother and father were okay, and that Lily, Asher were too, but he especially hoped that Fiona would be okay, but he knew they were not, even though he could not hear or see them, he knew the community was doomed.
"I'm sorry Fiona," Jonas said, as though he herd what Fiona had said, "I'm sorry I did this to you, to all of you." A tear rolled down his cheek as he said the last sentence, he hoped it would not be his last sentence. All he felt now was pain, hunger, and saddens.
Jonas awoke to the cold air, with a feeling that something was wrong, however he wasn't sure what.
"Gabe?" Jonas asked, "You awake?" There was only silence. "GABRIEL!" Jonas yelled with fear. Gabriel still did not answer. At that moment Jonas knew what the feeling he had felt was. Loss. Even though Gabriel was not in the community, he still got released. At that moment Jonas did not want to keep moving, he did not want to pretend everything would be okay. Jonas now knew that there was no Elsewhere, and even if there were, he would never get to see it. Jonas lied on the ground and welcomed the pain, he welcomed the starvation, he welcomed the suffering, he welcomed loss, he welcomed death.
