It was Sunday afternoon, and everyone was gathered around for the weekly barbecue. Andy was sitting on a picnic bench with a beer in her hand watching her daughter Bella talk to her best friend Caely. They were smiling and laughing, at something Bella had just said. Andy was happy her daughter was happy. Earlier that week, Bella had walked into 15 filled with anger and sadness. Her boyfriend, Brian, had cheated on her and she was furious. She had broken up with him, but his constant attempts to win her back had left the 16 year old frustrated and upset. 15 division were her family, and everyone knew what had happened. Bella didn't really mind. She was glad to have the support of a bunch of cops, especially when it came to cheating boyfriends.
"Oh my god," said Bella, struggling to regain composure. "I haven't laughed like that in ages."
Caely smiled, but it quickly dropped.
"What?" asked Bella. Looking behind her she saw Brian approaching, a bouquet of roses in his hand.
"What do you want this time," she said, sighing. She was so fed up with his lame attempts to get her back. God, boys were so stupid sometimes.
"Look, babe, I made a mistake. I want you back" He held the roses out to her, put she merely looked at them with mild amusement. She could feel the eyes of her whole family on her, but she didn't really mind.
"Seriously? Roses?" she raised her eyebrows, "Hun you couldn't win me back with a million roses. Or a million apologies. Or a million spa treatments." She quirked her lips, smirking. Several people choked on their drinks in the background, but she kept her eyes on Brian. "You had your chance, and you lost it."
"But I love you."
Bella just smiled, "You should have thought of that before you cheated. Maybe next time you'll know better and won't make the same mistake." She paused, and let out a breath. "You can go now."
Finally accepting failure, Brian turned and walked away. When he had faded in the distance, Caely turned to Bella with wide eyes.
"Where did you learn to do that?"
Bella smiled again. "Something my mom told me. If a guy ever cheats on you, you don't scream, you don't beg and you don't cry. You hold your head up high and walk away. It's his loss, not yours."
"Wow." Said Caely. "Go Andy."
"I know, right?" laughed Bella.
