Lily looked exhausted. Her face was flushed and her fiery hair stuck to the back of her neck from sweat. Nonetheless, she looked quite content and enthralled with the small bundle in her arms. James sat next to her in the bed one arm thrown around his wife while he looked proudly at their newborn son.
The mediwitch present smiled softly at the pair of new parents. Unlike many others, they had chosen to give birth at home. The reason for this had become clear when the witch was escorted through the many magical defenses and wards placed throughout Godric's Hollow. And considering the times they were in, it was no wonder they had wanted to keep their little boy out of sight for the time being.
"Have you thought of a name?" the elder witch asked kindly.
"Sorry?" James asked sheepishly, dragging his gaze away from his son.
"A name," the witch repeated her smile widening. These two would make wonderful parents.
"We were waiting until he was born. We didn't even know if he would be a girl or boy," Lily explained.
"Then I'll give you three some time alone to decide." The witch left the room.
"He's so beautiful, Lils," James said softly looking down at his son. "He has your eyes exactly."
Lily laughed. "And your hair," she said running her fingers through her son's unruly black hair. "Too bad he'll lose it for a bit.
The boy gurgled in her arms in what could have been protest and both parents laughed. The boy stared up at his parents in wide eyed fascination.
"Smart already too," James complimented. "That'll be from you."
"But he still needs a name," Lily pointed out.
James pondered this for a moment. "Sirius? Remus?"
Lily laughed again. "We couldn't! I'm always scolding all of you; the boy would always think he was in trouble. Besides, imagine how the other would feel when we didn't use his name."
"I was thinking we could always make the other name his middle name. Sirius Remus Potter or Remus Sirius Potter."
Lily blushed. "Actually I was hoping his middle name could be James."
James grinned and Lily grew redder in response. "You like how James Potter sounds, eh?" Lily swatted him in the shoulder while James pretended to be wounded horribly by the hit.
"You're terrible," Lily said.
"Don't worry. I won't tell anyone," James reassured her, kissing her to seal his promise. "So we won't use any of my mates' names. How about Albus?"
"I can't imagine Dumbledore would like that. He'd be terribly embarrassed."
"Rubeus?
"No!"
"Mad-eye?"
"No! His first name is Alastor anyway."
"Alastor then."
"No!"
"Horace?"
"James…" Lily said in a warning tone.
"Snivellus?"
"James," Lily said sharply.
James held his hands up in surrender. "Just asking. What do you have in mind?"
Lily thought for a moment. "I want him to have his own name," Lily began slowly. "Not something he has to live up to. Something he can create his own story around."
James considered this briefly.
"Spike."
"He's not a dog, James!"
James was hardly bothered by all the rejection. "Can I hold him while you're thinking then?" James asked.
"Of course." Lily smiled passing her husband their son. He fussed briefly away from his mother's heartbeat, but settled when James softly rocked him. James hummed softly and the baby gurgled again, this time in what could have been approval.
"Harry," Lily finally said.
"Hm?"
"Harry James Potter," Lily clarified.
"Harry James Potter," James repeated, swirling the name in his mouth like he was tasting wine. "Harry James Potter. It's perfect," James said with approval.
"Happy Birthday, Harry," Lily whispered brushing Harry's hair away from his face. "Happy Birthday."
