I'm never going to be good enough for him. That was the thought that jarred Lily on a sunny April afternoon. It had never occurred to her that she would have to become someone that James deserved, he had always done that for her.

She hadn't meant to get into this mess. It had happened when she accidentally crossed the James Potter fan club. Lily hadn't actually believed it was a real group, she would usually shrug off any information about this stalker-ish group.

But they existed and they did not approve of her relationship with James. Why do they care if I've never worshipped the ground beneath James's feet. But she already knew the answer to that. It wasn't specifically that that they were angry about, it was more the fact that she had outright rejected him. And hurt him. Lily tugged on her red hair, curse him and his delicate feelings.

She supposed they had only given her the same as she gave to James, but it hurt. It had happened strangely quick too, one moment she was doing her transfiguration homework and the next...

Lily had been leaning over the table, quill in hand, trying to make sense of what she was reading, but her mind was on informational overload.

"Hello." She said, assuming it was one of her mates who had dropped into the seat beside her.

"You're disgusting."

Lily looked up quickly. "Excuse me?" This girl, no older than fifth year, had only just sat down and her first words were an insult.

"You heard me." The girl placed a hand on her hip. "You just think you're amazing don't you?" Lily raised an eyebrow, she had no idea what to say to this girl. "Well, we won't have it." She motioned to a group of girls standing close by. "You treated James like rubbish and now you think you can have him?"

Lily stood up, standing to her full extent. "I don't think that's any of your business."

In the next instant the girl pushed Lily who in turn stumbled backward. "You can't scare me."

"I have half a mind to give you a detention." Don't hex her, you're head girl. What sort of example is that? "Please, leave me alone."

The girl turned and stalked away, obviously not wanting to take the chance of having to polish the trophies without magic.

It had been a stupid sort of fight. The girl was mixed up, she didn't know what had happened between James and Lily.

Then why do I feel like such a pathetic excuse for a girlfriend.

"Lily, what are you doing here?" James asked sitting beside her, she had waited in his dorm since dinner.

She pulled him closer by his striped tie. "I'm a rubbish girlfriend aren't I?" She didn't give him a chance to answer. Yanking him closer, she brought his mouth onto hers.

He pulled away from her. "What are you on about? You're not a rubbish girlfriend."

"So a rubbish person then?"

"What?"

"I treated you badly, all of those years." She said, looking at her lap.

"I was a bit of a prick." James shrugged. "Where did all of this come from?"

"Your bloody fan club."

"They're barmy if they insulted you." He twirled a lock of her hair around his finger. "Honestly, don't you trust me enough to tell you when you're being a bad girlfriend? Which you were for a period of time." She hit him with the book in her hands. "Oi, what was that for?"

"You were being a bad boyfriend." Lily grinned. "Being the good girlfriend that I am, I mentioned it to you."

"The hitting was a bit unnecessary."

"I never said I was polite."

"I'm going to have to inform the fan club of your behavior. They'll practically start an uproar at the knowledge of this abuse."
