This is my view on what happened when Elizabeth Masen asked Carlisle to save Edward. Carlisle's POV. Review, please! :)

Thump...Thump...Thump...

The heart beats were all similar as I walked along the dark halls of the hospital. I tried not to let myself think of them too much though, for I knew they would all be stopping soon. I knew, as did most of the patients inside these doors, that they were all going to die. There was really only one thing that could help them, that only I could do for them, but I refused. They would be happier dead then caught in my tangled web of lies.

But my thoughts were interrupted when I passed a door and heard quiet sobbing. If any one else had passed by they wouldn't have noticed, but I had an advantage. I sighed in remorse, hoping that another death hadn't come just yet. I looked at the names on the door.

Mrs. Elizabeth Masen

Edward Anthony Masen

Yes, this was the family that had already had one die. The husband, a Mr. Edward Masen, I believe. I entered the room quietly as the scent of their delicious blood hit me. I merely shook my head and swallowed down the venom that flooded my mouth to attend to the young women crying in her bed. She was lying with her back turned to me, facing her sleeping son.

"Miss? Is everything alright?" I asked the woman gently. I could hear her son's heart beat very clearly now that I was so close. It was a bit slower than I would have liked, but I couldn't help that. The woman turned to me slowly with her weary green eyes. She wasn't stunned by my obvious beauty or voice, for she looked at my with only shear panic. But as she stared at me, her expression slowly changed. It became pleading.

She tried to push herself out of the small bed she was lying but quickly gave up when she realized she was too weak. She started a coughing fit

and I rushed over to calm her down. I patted her back gently as she became weaker with the coughing. Her heartbeat slowed. My eyes widened as her head drifted back to her pillow and shut her eyes.

"Miss? Come now, be strong," I said, panicked. I had of course seen patients die before, but it was hard, all the same.

Her eyes opened slowly as she tried to focus on my face, but she couldn't.

"I know you can save him. Help him. Please, he's my boy. I give you permission," she whispered with closed eyes. I didn't say anything, I couldn't believe what she had said. How could she know?

"I, um, well.. of course. If you are sure," I said quietly. How this woman could possibly know what I was, or that her son could be like me was beyond my wildest dreams. But she simply nodded and continued shakily, "Tell him I love him..."

I listened closely as the woman's heart beat for the last time. If I could cry, I would be now. I took the mysterious woman's hand and kissed it before making my way over to her son. His heart was dangerously slow, I knew that much. I didn't have much time if I wanted to meet Mrs. Masen's demands. I decided to think about her later. I wouldn't let ethics become involved here, either. What I was about to do was against my better judgement, but I could deal with the guilt later.

I stared at the young, innocent boy in front of me. I knew that if I did this, there was a chance he might want to stay with me, to be a companion. After a moment of hesitation I grabbed him from his bed and leaped out of the tiny window to my left. I ran though the sleeping city with the seventeen year old orphan who was destined to become a vampire.
