It was such an unexpected request that Light thought he had misheard and asked Ryuzaki to repeat himself.
"I asked if you would indulge me with a staring contest."
Ah, that's what Light thought he had said. After slight hesitation Light agreed and the staring contest began.
Light grew uneasy. Why would L want a staring contest? He must have an ulterior motive, but what could it be? He racked his brain as he stared into Ryuzaki's somewhat bored looking eyes.
Eyes… perhaps that was it. Didn't they say eyes were the window to the soul? He must have been using the staring contest as an excuse to get a good look at Light's soul.
Light was about to throw the contest, but stopped himself. What if that was what L wanted him to think? Then, if he were to blink, L would know he was on to him and that would enforce L's suspicion that Light was Kira.
Very well, Light thought as Ryuzaki's unrelenting gaze continued, two can play at that game.
He stared harder than he had ever stared before, eyes boring deep into Ryuzaki's soul. I can see you, he tried to convey with his stare, I can see your soul.
Time passed, slowly and agonizingly until, finally, Ryuzaki blinked.
Light jumped from his seat and cheered, victorious.
"AHAHAHAHAHAHA! I win, Ryuzaki!"
"Uh… yes, you did." Ryuzaki blinked a few times before turning back to the console in front of him.
Teeth clenched, Light sat back down and glared at the screen in front of him.
Damn that L and his tricks.
