Eyes - Windows to the Soul
They say eyes are windows to the soul. If that's true, then this boy's soul has the biggest windows I've ever seen; he just has shutters on them. Oh, his eyes aren't larger than most. In fact, they're a tad on the small side. But when he opens up those shutters, letting the sun shine in, boy are they the biggest windows I've ever seen. I never knew eyes could express so many things at once. Behind those orbs are more emotions than should be experienced at once.
Pain. Pain is by far the most prominent thing there; it's so strong it must be etched into his soul, a permanent fixture. I can almost see what caused this pain, and I know the word: family. A dysfunctional family, a child unwilling to admit any of it. Feuding parents, threats, perhaps even beatings, must be part of this poor boy's life. There is no complete healing, not for this kind of pain.
Sadness. Sadness is temporary, but seems to be lodged into his soul. I cannot tell what has gone on in this boy's life to make him sad, but the cause is obviously with his thoughts constantly. It's the way a stone is jammed into a horse's hoof. If it's there too long, the horse goes lame and can't walk, even for a while after the stone is removed. But the sadness can be removed, it's host renewed.
Pity. Is that pity for me? Oh well, it does not matter. Many look at me that way; my shabby robes practically tell the world that I am poor. But why is he looking at me that way? For that matter, why have his shutters opened?
Hope. Hope is faint, a pale blue glimmer in his eyes. But it exists, and that is good. If he can experience hope, for anything, then he can be healed. I wonder what he's hoping for?
The last few are hard to identify, and I haven't a snowball's chance of understanding why. Spite - well that's understandable since he's looking at me. Jealousy - now that one is confusing; what do I have that he hasn't? And what is the last one - love? No, it can't be.
Draco Malfoy blinked, and in that instant put his shutters back up again. He'd looked at me for no more than a second. It was a glance really. How could I be so sure of any of those things? Well, he's gone now, around the corridor. Perhaps I'll get a second glance some other time, and analyze him a bit more.
"Hey, earth to Ginny?" Colin said, waving his hand in front of my face. "Ginny, are you okay? You totally blanked out."
"Yeah, sorry, Colin," I replied, clearing my head. "Now, about those pictures."
