A Sweet A Day Keeps L Away
Drabble
"I will try any means necessary, Near – do not force me to." Said L, holding the sweet dangerously close to Near's mouth. The boy leaned as far back as he could, a small frown on his face. He didn't like sweets as much as L or Mello did, and couldn't understand why they liked them so much.
When birthdays were celebrated in Wammy's Orphanage, Near never ate any of the sweets laid out on the tables, but only watched as his friend Dove stuffed her face with any sweet she could find. Though she liked those coffee sweets of hers that she always had with her, she could not resist temptation when it was staring her in the face.
Near, on the other hand, did not think of sweets as temptations. Plus, he only ate them when Dove forced him to, and the only time he gave in was when it was her birthday.
Though everyone thought of the redhead to be annoying, Near thought of her more as…endearing. She intrigued him, fascinated him, and –
"Near – please stop thinking about Dove when I am trying to get you to warm up to sweets." L instructed him, frowning. Near furrowed his eyebrows, and opened his mouth to ask him how he realized that he was thinking about Dove when L quickly crammed the chocolate cake in his mouth, effectively shutting him up. Near had no choice but to swallow, and, coughing, he glared at his mentor distastefully. Said mentor acted nonchalant, as if he didn't see the glare at all.
L crammed some cake into his own mouth, chewing thoughtfully. "Perhaps you should think of Dove more often. That way, it'll be easier for me to get you to try more sweets often. After all, a sweet a day keeps…me away, you could say. Well, it keeps me off of your case." Near's eye twitched, but he didn't say – or do – anything more, deciding to ignore his mentor and began to concentrate on his puzzle, his mind always straying back to a certain Wammy's girl.
…thinking about Dove was proving to be hazardous to Near's health – physically and mentally.
