Her fingers lingered on the doorknob; her palm was pressed against the cold steel. The hinges creaked, and when she let her weight rest against the door, it slid open.
"Cam?"
She poked her head through the doorway; a rush of cool air hit her face. He made a sound. A grunt, and she took that as a sign to enter.
She squinted at his still form from across the dimly lit room. He sat on a small cot in the corner, hunched over, with his elbows resting on his thighs, and his hands hanging limply between his knees. She glanced anxiously around the small space. It was definitely a step up from the dark prison cell he had been in before.
"New accommodations?"
His shoulders moved in a half shrug, a stiff, jerky movement. He didn't look up.
"Yeah, somethin' like that."
She approached him slowly. It took only a few steps to reach him, but she paused at his side, briefly worrying her bottom lip between her teeth. She lowered herself onto the cot.
"Cam…" She reached out, resting her hand on his arm. His head turned toward her movement, and his eyes lingered on her fingers. She could see his face now his expression was melancholy; she could see the red around his eyes fading.
"Listen," she pulled her lip between her teeth again. "If you need to talk-"
"-I don't"
It was a sharp retort. Her eyes shut at the cold tone of his voice. Her fingers involuntarily clutched at his arm. He let out a quick breath, and then his voice came out softer, quieter.
"I just…I don't want to talk about it."
He shook his head slightly, and his face was turned away from her again. Her eyes dropped to his hands where his fingers flexed into fists before falling limp.
"Cam, I'm not going to pretend what I know what you're feeling right now, but you know, I'm here."
There was a short pause, and his jaw clenched; she could see the muscle there twitch. He made a small gesture, a nod.
"Yeah."
She sighed softly and pulled her hand away, breaking their contact.
"They're waiting on us back in the lab."
She pushed herself off the cot and turned towards the door. The springs of the mattress groaned against her sudden movement. She wasn't a step away before she felt a tug on her wrist.
"Sam, I-"
He didn't look at her right away as he stood. His eyes traveled around the room before settling on her face. Her blue eyes were almost level with his. His rough fingers moved against the smooth skin of her palm, and she looked up at him curiously, ignoring the chill she felt at his touch. He was watching her with an intense look, but as he spoke his voice was close to a whisper.
"Thank you."
