He used to dread walking the streets of Midgar. There was a time when he couldn't look at Marlene when she entered a room. Once upon a time, he would destroy anything that was the colour pink. It had hurt too much because it had brought back painful memories of a beautiful young woman with forgiving, kind eyes and long brunette curls framing her heart-shaped face.
It had reminded him of a life that was no longer there, a presence that would be forever missed. He didn't want to think about her because it made getting his head around what had happened so much harder. He didn't want to replay her death over and over again in his mind. He had wanted to see her living with that bright smile of hers.
Now though, he knew it was possible to go on. That it was okay to feel sad and lonely sometimes. But he also knew that she forgave him for all the times he may of hurt her(though she insisted he could never hurt her) and he knew that she never blamed him for anything. Not once.
It was always going to be hard to keep going, knowing he would never see her smile again or watch her play with her hair while she was thinking. It was hard to watch Marlene run around the house with her braid swinging back and forth with a bunch of flowers in her hand. It was hard to push away the memories as he stared at the old abandoned Church. But it was life and despite how hard it was, Cloud knew he couldn't give up now. It was worth living.
If only for her.
