A/N: Inspired by some basketball pics of the guys in LJ. A bit short but hope you like it :-)
Brief Reprieve
"I can't believe you talked me into this." Dean mumbled as he shrugged off his t-shirt.
"It's okay Dean". Sam said grinning as he threw Dean the ball. "I know you're a little bit rusty so I'll even spot you 5 how's that?"
"Sam, Sam, Sam", Dean said shaking his head in mock disappointment as he bounced the ball. "Now how many times has Dad taught you to never ever underestimate your opponent." Faking a left Dean easily dribbled the ball through Sam's long legs and swiftly ran around the gangly younger man before following it through with a clean jump shot sailing the ball through the basket.
"Still wanna spot me that five?" Dean said with a smirk.
"Lucky shot." Sam countered as he tried to block Dean's further attempts to sink the basket and succeeding as his fingertips thwarted the trajectory of a shot that sailed past his head.
"Man that was a sure ass basket." Dean mumbled as Sam took possession of the ball and shot a clean basket with nothing but net. "Too low too slow Dean," Sam said grinning.
"Yeah, tallboy, lets see who's the slow one", Dean said as he deftly intercepted a dribble and followed it with a lay up which saw the ball hit the backboard and sink into the basket
"Still pretty limber for your old age there Dean. But lets see whether you can keep it up" Sam said with a sly grin as they continued playing.
It had been a spur of the moment thing. They had just finished exorcising a poltergeist which had been terrorizing a newly abandoned school when walking back to the car Sam suddenly had the genius idea of having a game. Dean had looked at him like he was possessed and had to hold back a "Christo" when Sam had suggested the idea. Still high on adrenaline from the hunt however, the younger man's enthusiasm was contagious and he grudgingly relented as Sam went to hunt for a ball somewhere in the building and the switch to the floodlights which lighted the court.
Truth was, Dean didn't need much persuading. Seeing the gleam in Sam's eyes as he suggested the game was enough to get Dean on board let alone the puppy dog look that had always been his undoing. He hadn't seen that gleam for as long as he remembered and he wasn't about to be the one to burst the kids hopes. Of course it didn't mean that he couldn't gripe and complain about it. After all he couldn't have the kid thinking he completely had Dean wrapped around his not so little fingers.
"Okay, I believe that makes it 18-16." Dean smirked as he made another basket. "So who's the one having trouble keeping up now huh?" Dean said as he turned to Sam who had suddenly stilled. "What's the matter, had enough? Tell you what I'll be a good older brother and give you this shot." Dean said as he threw the ball at Sam who was hit squarely on the chest as he made no attempt to catch it. Instead, his hands flew to his head and he fell to his knees.
"Oh shit. Not another vision." Dean cursed as he ran to immediately knelt beside him all thoughts of the game pushed aside as reality,… their reality, came slamming back.
