Today was the day Tobias Eaton would die- he could feel it in his bones. The doctors had been wrong time and time again, saying at first that he'd die over two months ago, then six weeks ago, then two weeks ago. They'd kept him alive for longer than he'd hoped, but this time, they were right- it would be today. Today, his suffering would end.

A warm mid-July breeze floated in through the open window, carrying with it the scent of summertime and sunshine. Somewhere out there, children were playing and people went about their daily lives, but he lay in his bed, alone for the first time in ages- after his friends had said their tearful goodbyes, he'd politely asked them to leave him in peace. So they did.

The sound of his breathing was the loudest thing in the room that had once felt tiny to the point of claustrophobia, but now seemed overly large. He just felt so tired.. so tired.. but he wasn't willing to slip away just yet. He wanted so badly to feel life for just one more moment, life the way it had been before he'd gotten sick. But it was a last wish no one could grant- he was just too close to death's door.

As he took his final breaths, he stared out the window and looked into the sky. The blue was the same shade of blue it had been all those years ago on the day he'd first seen Tris, falling out of the sky. The Stiff had jumped first. Not even he had jumped first. He closed his eyes and remembered how it used to be, before she'd been killed. He heard her laughter, saw the blonde of her hair, felt her touch. The displacement he'd felt since her death was gone, because he was finally where he belonged. With her.

And just like that, they were reunited again. Looking into her gray- blue eyes felt like coming home after many long years abroad, and he laced their fingers together, her tiny hands in his.

He pressed his forehead against hers and whispered, "I've never loved another.

And then, in the next instant, he was free.
