FIREFLIES

[Lieutenant Malcolm Reed, personal log:]

I didn't think we'd find beauty out here in the Expanse, but for just one moment yesterday all of us felt at peace. We were on our course when suddenly all of the lights on Enterprise went out; it was complete darkness.

I was in the mess hall with Hoshi and Travis at the time, but as soon as we stood up, millions of little lights began floating in the air, just like fireflies.

I looked toward Hoshi and it was amazing. The lights had landed all over her. It was as if she were made of tiny stars. The light was sufficient to illuminate her face in its glow.

Of course I was concerned and thought to brush off the invading fireflies, but Hoshi held up her hand and smiled at me.

"Don't, Malcolm, they're not harming us," she said.

I've learned to trust Hoshi. If she says a creature is sentient, then I believe her. Still, I was suspicious. We've encountered seemingly benign creatures before. Then Hoshi spoke again.

"We're passing through their swarm. They're asking that we please not harm them. We'll be through in just a minute."

I was hoping that Hoshi meant precisely sixty seconds, so I moved to the intercomm which oddly was still working and contacted the Captain. I relayed Hoshi's message and the Captain announced that everyone should stay still when Phlox confirmed he had found nothing threatening.

Of course I kept my eyes on Hoshi and stood by her side just in case anything happened. She smiled at me and before I knew it she had taken my hand in hers and reached with her other for Travis. We stood there like little children watching fireflies in summer for minute, our one moment of peace.

The lights came on suddenly and we felt disappointed, but no one was harmed. I was so surprised it took me a moment to release Hoshi's hand, but then we all went to the bridge.

There was no sign of the swarm in our path at all. Curious creatures. Trip still hasn't determined how only the lights on the ship were affected, but he seemed more relaxed than I have seen him recently.

And me? I keep seeing Hoshi illuminated by a million tiny stars. I find her name suits her.
