Prologue: From the ashes

Time gets a different meaning when you've lived for as long as I have, it's no longer a limit for what you can do, but something that taunts you with its presence. You might think immortality is to be sought after, however, as most things in life the picture of having it far outweighs reality.

Now you probably wonder what makes me the right person to answer all this, and I'll tell you. My name is Isabella Swan, or at least in this lifetime it is. I'm the first and original shape shifter, a Phoenix, and I'm over five thousand years old.

During my many lifetimes I've seen the rise and fall of Empires. The best and worst mankind has to offer, I've seen newborn babies reunited with their mother, a union between two people completely in love and a husband sacrificing his life to save his wife and child.

I've seen murder and rapes happen in front of my very eyes without any possibility to intervene, wars that left entire cities of innocent for dead and pure evil who takes satisfaction in the misery of others.

All this time I've walked this Earth as the Guardian of Shape shifters, the chosen one to observe and guide my kind forward. To keep them on the right path and their powers in the use of good, and if needed to take away the very same gift. This was the very reason I was going to Forks, Washington, a small town with a fondness for rain.

It had come to my attention that the local wolves were going to start changing again after several decades of silence. Young wolves spelled disaster when it came to temper, but I still hoped I didn't have do anything. Last time I hadn't been able to come, but luckily the tribe had solved their own problems then.

My existence was a secret to most of my kind and everyone else, the few times I had been forced to introduce myself or intervene in anything that happened I had commanded them to secrecy. Every larger pack of shape shifters had their own Alpha that commanded them, but they had nothing against my mind and abilities. Even in human form I retain many of my Phoenix abilities, control of fire being the most powerful one, but incredible speed, strength and hearing together with my indestructible body was useful at times as well.

Nothing could have prepared me for what I was going to face when I arrived on what seemed to be just an ordinary assignment. After more than five thousand years I was finally going to meet my mate and loved one, something I had given up on a long time ago.

Let me know what you think
