Hello one and all! I know the poem isn't super canonical, but I wrote it on a depressing whim. Also, bear in mind that it was originally a song.
Jehan, with flowers,
And nothing to say –
She never knew that
He loved her that day.
A lull put that boy
Into a sweet trance.
He wandered away and
He slept as by chance.
While she dreamed on
Of he who didn't love her,
This boy of the fields
Sang as her lover:
"Oh, love, call my name, call my name
On the barricade, barricade.
Oh, what kisses I'd give you, give you
If you only knew, only knew.
"Oh, I'll make you a gown, a gown
Of snowdrops and heather-down, down.
I'll hold you tight in my arms
And I'll keep you from all harms.
"And so if you can, if you can
Let me sing, let me love.
I would give my life for you.
If only I could talk to you."
He danced with her there
As he lay by the wall.
And she, knowing nothing,
Nev' heard his sweet call.
There they found Jehan
As he dreamed by the day.
They woke him and hurt him,
And took him away.
The others, they missed him,
And she hardly knew
Who this sweet boy they loved was,
Innocent and true.
When they tied his hands,
And covered his eyes,
This shy boy shed no tear,
His lips made no cries.
Oh, those lips which longed
For a kiss from she,
Not once did they beg for
The kiss or mercy.
But as he saluted
His friends faraway,
He sang his old song
In his mind on that day:
"Oh, love, call my name, call my name
On the barricade, barricade.
Oh, what words I'd have given you, given you
If I'd only spoke to you, spoke to you.
Oh, I'd have made you a crown, a crown
Of clouds and thistle-down, down.
I'd have kissed your lovely face,
And you'd have dreamed in my embrace.
"And so, if you can, if you can
Remember me, 'member me.
I wish my death were all for you.
I only wish I spoke to you."
And then they levelled
Their weapons at he,
And he lifted his face,
Though only dark he could see.
She on the barricade
Heard the sound,
And the sweet boy he fell,
In his blood to the ground.
But she never knew
Of his love unsaid.
And he never knew
She soon also lay dead.
And so, call his name, call her name
On the barricade, barricade.
They smile now, smile there
In Heaven there, somewhere.
