Number Five...

"Again Mom?" said Mariah with a sad sigh, which sounded like she was being tortured. "I'm sorry, Hun. It's just not working out," her mom replied. Mariah's mom's eyes looked dead, expressionless. She'd been through so much in her life. Mariah's mom had been marries and divoreced four times already. Now it was going to be number five. This was not only hard on Mariah's mom, but on her kids too. Just as soon as they got used to their new stepdad, her mom told them it just wasn't working out and they had to be out of the house by the end of the month.

They always stayed in the same city and at the same school, though. It was good that the kids got to keep their same friends that they'd always had. Mariah went upstairs to her bedroom that was next to her brother, Lee's room at the front of the house. She laid down on her bed and her kitten jumped up on the bed and laid down next to her. "You're lucky. You don't know what's going on around you, you stupid cat," the kitten just turned her head to the side. Mariah laughed a half-hearted, almost forced laugh. "I hate my mom. She can't get a job, she drinks, she smokes...I just hate her!" The kitten shook her head like she was trying to say no to Mariah. Mariah went downstairs. "Mom!" she called. There was no answer. She tried again. "MOM!" she screamed. She still heard no reassuring voice. She went to the kitchen and found a note. Before she even read it, Marie's heart started beating faster and faster until she thought it was going to jump right out of her chest. The note said:

Mariah and Lee,

I hate to do this, but I can't take it. I'm leaving. I won't tell you where I'm going. Don't worry about me. I might come back, and I might not.

-Mom-

The paper was stained with tears. Mariah started shaking. She ran to the bathroom and got sick. She felt a little better. She had calmed down a little bit. She didn't know what to do. She didn't know who to call. Cameron was spending the night at a friends. Dad was away in Chicago at a metting. She could call the police, but the note said Mom might come back. Mariah ran up to her room, squeezed her pillow until her arms felt like they were going to break. She cried like she was never going to stop. She was breathing really hard and saying, "Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom, come back...please..." She sat there crying until she heard a sound like someone was trying to get in the front door. It was thunderstorming outside, and she was scared enough already. She went downstairs and opened the door, no one was there. Just then, she heard a window on the other side of the house break. She ran. All the way to that room she ran. Standing in the middle of the room was Marie's mom, soaking wet, and dripping on her expensiv asian rug. "Mom..." Mariah said, almost in a whisper. She hugged her mom. "I'm sorry," her mom said. They both started crying, standing there in the middle of the room, feeling comforted in each other's embrace.
