Not Everyone Was Gone.
He stared and wondered if it was worth the cost,
Of the hurt and pain, of broken hearts and lives lost,
He wished and longed for all that could've been,
If it hadn't been for that fateful night of Halloween.
He leaned down and brushed the snow away,
And read again what the stone had to say,
He longed for and missed those he'd never even known,
And suddenly he wished he wasn't here alone,
He heard the faint sound of a familiar and beautiful melody,
But to him, it was the rhythm of a painful memory,
Then as though an angel had heard his unspoken prayer,
A voice called from behind, "I knew I'd find you here,"
He didn't turn around, but said "I should have known,"
"You never knew how to leave me alone,"
"I know how, I just never wanted to," she said,
And he heard her walking towards him, leaving behind a faint tread.
He looked at the ground, thought of those who lay underneath,
As she smiled and bent down to conjure up another wreath,
He couldn't trust his voice, and he needed to say thank you,
But the look in her eyes told him that she already knew,
He remembered the only time he'd been here before,
He didn't know if the pain was less or more,
But he knew she was the reason that he had found,
The courage to come, stay and then turn around.
The snow glowed like silver under the beautiful moonlight,
And warmth spread through him, even on this cold December night,
He wondered how happiness could be found among all this sadness,
He wondered how she held together in midst of all this madness.
"They're proud," she said, "Proud of the man that you've become,"
"And they'll be right here in your heart, even for years to come,"
"I know," he said, then grimaced as his voice broke,
"I know," he said again, and felt her tremble in her cloak.
He knew that her fire was what kept him alive,
He knew that her warmth was what forced him to survive,
she slipped her hand in his and held on,
She reminded him that not everyone he loved was gone.
It was time, he realized, to stop taking and start giving,
Time to live, not for the dead, but for the living,
They would be proud to know that the lesson was learned,
"Let's go," he told her, and said goodbye until the next time he returned.
A/n-Please take some time to review, it would make my day.
