The Murder at Kensington Gardens
Lord Layton was a rich man. He had no heirs and when he died it was discovered that he had made no will. This meant that his true next of kin needed to be found. In truth, nobody liked Lord Layton and he had no loyal friends. However, when the police had announced that Lord Layton's next of kin must step forward, crowds of people were gathering at the police station, trying to claim their 'rightful' inheritance.
Chief Inspector James Japp of Scotland Yard was told of this and he consulted his close friend- Monsieur Hercule Poirot to help him investigate.
Monsieur Poirot was not usually involved with helping the police as he considered them foolish for not using order and method in their investigations. He was willing to help his friend Japp as they had solved many mysteries together in the past. Japp went to visit Poirot at Whitehaven Mansions where he was greeted by the friendly smile of Miss Felicity Lemon- secretary to Monsieur Poirot. She led him to Poirot's office and said warmly,
"A visitor to see you Mr Poirot!" Poirot turned in his chair.
"Who is it at this time of day?" asked Poirot and Miss Lemon chuckled.
"It's the Chief Inspector Japp to see you" Upon hearing these words, Poirot smiled and said,
"Let him in Miss Lemon"
Japp walked into the room and greeted Poirot and Captain Hastings (who was slouching on the couch and reading a motoring magazine)
"What brings you here mon ami?" asked Poirot.
"Have you read about the late Lord Layton?" asked Japp.
"Ah.. Oui, I'm sure that I have" stumbled Poirot as he gave a small smile from under his mustache. Japp continued,
"The lads at the Yard are searching for the rightful heir to Layton's money. Word has spread that he was a very rich man and now everyone who even knew him from one occasion is clutching at the straw, hoping that they'll be able to outsmart the police and inherit. However we cannot seem to find the rightful heir. So we need your help, Poirot. Help us.
Poirot smiled once again and stood up.
"Mon ami, I'll be honoured to help you in any way that I can... Alas, firstly we must return to the scene of Monsieur Layton's death. Wherever the possibility of murder shoots into my brain, I must know the whole truth. Come Hastings! Much work is ahead of us" And with these very words, he left the room. Hastings followed him. And when they had gone, Japp went to Miss Lemon's office and asked,
"Is there any chance for a cup of tea?"
