The air in the room was heavy, a mix of anticipation and anxiety hung. A dim glow from the dirty lamp in the corner kissed the lovestruck boy's face. Sweat streaked down his temples, his teeth peeled away at his dry lips. The thudding of his heart could be felt throughout his whole chest, and the rush of blood filled his ears.
"Novak Residence," a cheery, female voice spoke.
His free hand played with the end of his Letterman jacket while the other one sweated against the phone's handle.
"Is Castiel there? I'm a friend of his," he said, trying to sound calm.
"Let me check."
Well, I've come this far. It's too late to go back now.. unless I hang up before either she comes back or he picks up.
Eyeing the receiver, he reached to hang up and listen to the beautiful sound of the dial tone. But, both fortunately and unfortunately, it was too late to end the call.
"This is Castiel?" a bright, yet rough voice spoke.
"Hi. Uhm.. this is Dean.. your classmate," his stomach twisted into a knot, "and, I know this is.. really unusual to be calling out of the blue. But," taking a deep breath in, he said, ready to lose everything, "Homecoming is just a week away, and I wanted to know if I could bring you along as my date, you know, if you wanted."
A long pause ensued, causing Dean's throat closed up and his eyes spilled out tears.
Sniffling could be heard on Castiel's side of the phone.
"I would love to, Dean Winchester," he sobbed out with a small chuckle.
At that moment, both of their faces stretched out a smile from ear to ear.
Castiel may have been the quiet brainiac, and Dean may have been the cocky jock, but both of them have been waiting for this moment since the day they laid eyes on each other.
