Through the thick darkness, a whimper escapes from the restless body on the other side of the bed. Even though his eyes keep his mind asleep, the nightmares keep his body up. Cold sweat starts to creep out of his skin, sticking him to the sheets, pillow and blanket. The body beside him was awake, just now becoming aware of his tossing and turning.
"Castiel.. hey, Cas.." his voice was groggy and his eyes fought to stay open. He rubbed his eyes and leaned over to him, placing a hand on his shoulder.
"Hey," Sam called out sternly, "Castiel. Hey, wake up."
Castiel's frightened eyes opened immediately as he coughed on his spit. He couldn't see anything, but he felt Sam next to him. His heart thumped harsh inside of his chest, his breathing was irregular and fast. Shaking overtook every inch of his body; arms, legs, feet, hands, even fingers. A dull ring stung his ears. Pulling his hands over his face, he sobbed.
"It's alright, you're going to be okay," Sam said as he put his arms around Castiel and helped him sit up, and proceeded to hold him close. He rested his head ontop of his bushy mess of bedhead and closed his eyes. Rubbing his back, comforting him, he waited until his sobs turned into sniffles.
"I'm sorry, Sam," Castiel whispered.
"Shh.." Sam started to play with Cas' hair, easing him of his troubles. Cupping his cheeks, although they couldn't see each other, they turned their attention to one another. Sam rubbed his thumbs along the stubble of the fragile man. His cheeks were stained with tears, which made their way down to the stubble, making it a little damp. But that didn't matter to Sam. Their foreheads slowly moved closer and closer, leaving them nose to nose, quiet and still.
Castiel could smell the aftershave and gunpowder so clearly now. Being this close to Sam, it made him feel steady. The gunpowder made you remember that he killed for a living. But the aftershave made you realize that at the end of the day, he takes care of himself, no matter how badly he wants to die. Cas' trembling hands found the back of Sam's neck. He hung onto Sam while they breathed in and out of each other's space.
Sam could smell the cold sweat that was drenched on Cas. He needed to be there at all times for him. Knowing all too well what he was going through, he made a vow that he'd be there. Even in the dead of night when the toxins inside of his mind forced him to be awake.
A low hum came from Sammy.
Cas laid back down, knowing what he was doing.
Completing a few long vibrations, he sang quietly so that only Cas could hear:
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
You make me happy, when skies are grey.
You'll never know dear, how much I love you.
So please don't take my sunshine away..
That song always made Cas fall fastly asleep. Sam always knew what to do.
