Lady Antebellum - Run to You
******
Morgan hesitated for a long moment. He told himself that Emily would be asleep by now, but he knew that's not true. If he was honest with himself and not run from reality, he would know that she would still be wide awake. Finally, he plucked up enough courage and knock on her door. She answered the door and smiled when she saw Morgan, she didn't seem surprise to see him. In fact, she looks as if she had been waiting for him.
"Is this a bad time?" he asked.
"Does this," she pointed to her attire, which consist of an old t-shirt and sweat pants, "look like a bad time?" He shrugged and made his way to the couch. "Coffee?" she asked.
They sat in silence for a while, sipping their coffee. "It's about Stanley, isn't it?" she asked.
"Yeah," he nodded. She didn't say anything more, but just waited for him to open up to her. "I just feel sorry for that boy. He trusted Vincent, he thought that this nice guy who helped him through one of his most difficult times was his friend," his voice breaking a little. She reached out and took his hand, hoping to provide some form of comfort.
She knew how much this case had affected him. She could see Morgan relieving the worst part of his childhood. The man, whom he thought of as his father, his best friend, had betrayed his trust and made his life miserable, much like how Vincent betrayed Stanley's trust. "Sometimes," he continued after composing himself, "I wish I cared less."
Shit.
"No," she quickly replied. "Don't do that. I know it hurts, the cases we handle would affect us one way or another. We're all damaged in some ways. But the reason why you're so good at what you do is because you care." She paused to let him digest what she said. "I know it's hard. If we care too much, we can't do our job but if we stopped caring, we would be too jaded to go on."
Morgan didn't say anything, so Emily continued. "You're a good guy," she reminded him, "And the world needs more good guys like you to protect innocent people from getting hurt."
"You make me sound like a superman," he tried to give her a smile but failed.
"In a way, you are."
"But I couldn't protect Stanley..."
"Morgan," she sighed, "You can't save everyone. You know that." And he did, that was what he told Reid a few weeks back. "Stanley has to decide for himself, if he wants to overcome it and become stronger or let this affect him for the rest of his life. You overcame it and look how much you've accomplished."
For the first time that night, he gave her a smile, a genuine smile not a forced one. "Thanks," he said, pulling her into a hug.
"What are friends for," her voice muffled against his chest. "I'll always be here if you need me, you know."
"Yeah, I know I can run to you," he said. "But don't tell anyone I almost cried," he joked, "I have a reputation to protect."
She looked up at him and smiled when she saw the light in his eyes return, "I promise."
Hope you liked it. Let me know what you think.
