Chapter 1: The Beginning
The wind blew hard across the road as I walked along the edge of the old and worn down asphalt. The air was almost chilling, but then again I was wearing nothing more than a denim jacket, jeans, hiking boots and a t-shirt. I had no idea where I was going, but I didn't care as long as I put as much distance between myself and Tall Oaks as possible. It was plain as day that this road was rarely used, the wear and tear of the elements was a dead give away, the second fact was that no cars or trucks had passed me on my way to whatever town or city was in the middle of this desert.
I don't know how much time had passed before I heard the first roar of an engine. But it wasn't a car or truck engine, no this was a motorcycle engine, sounded like a Harley-Davidson from the roar, but then again I'm not all that good at distinguishing the engines. I fully expected the rider to just drive by without even stopping for a wandering teen like me. Turns out I was dead wrong. The rider did stop and they stopped ahead of me before pulling the motorcycle to the side of the road.
As I got closer I was able to discern the rider better. She was wearing a red leather jacket over a black shirt, and denim shorts that were cut very high.
Her brown hair was long and tied up in a ponytail. "Hey kid" she said as I got close enough to see her face "need a ride?" she asked. Not really trusting my mouth to say anything I reluctantly nodded. "Alright then hop on." she said gesturing to the back of her motorcycle. Putting my leg over it, I carefully put my arms around her waist and grabbed them securing myself on the bike. With a roar of the engine she took off the bike practically flying down the highway.
The hours went by before we came across a roadside diner. Slowing the bike down she brought it to a stop in front of the diner. "Go on in, I'll be there in a bit."
she said, so I made my way to the door. The inside was like an 80's or so diner but that gave it a little bit more character in terms of appeal. "Go ahead and take a seat hon, I'll be with ya shortly." A middle aged waitress said from behind the counter. Walking to one of the booth seats with a window I sat and waited for the waitress. The window gave me a clear view of the outside of the diner which also had a gas station in front of it. About five trucks were parked in front of them the drivers were out standing by the tanks waiting for them to fill up. All of them were looking at the biker girl and that set me on edge.
"You all right there hon?" the waitress asked noting my expression. "Those truckers know 'em?" I asked hoping they weren't old friends. "Yes, I unfortunately do."
she replied "All of 'em are regulars and none of 'em are pleasant conservation, why?" she replied. "I may have to seriously knock some heads in a few minutes." I said getting up and heading for the exit.
Sure enough when I got out they were all heading for the girl. "That's a nice ride there little lady." one of them said a perverse grin plastered to his face. "Thanks." she said. "What do you say we get together and have a little fun, huh?" another said as he began to inch closer and closer to her. "No thanks I've got a long ride ahead." she said matter of factly. "Well ain't that a shame, we was plannin on a little bit of fun with you." As the third said that the fourth grabbed her ponytail and her arms and said "Of course there's other ways we can make it happen."
Clenching my fists I made my way toward them while shouting "Hey!" all of them turned around looked at me and laughed. "Hahahahaha! Oh, now this is rich! Clyde deal with him." The third trucker walked towards me. This guy clearly loved to brawl his nose was pretty much flattened, his shirt was also ripped in certain places showing off his muscles. He leaned in close to me and his breath reeked of alcohol and chewing tobacco. "Now, you just walk back in the diner, and I won't have to really hurt you boy." he said. His first mistake was leaning in close to me, I proved this when I leaned back and headbutted him full force. Howling in pain he clutched his head, well he was until I brought my foot up into his groin.
He collapsed clutching his groin in pain. I then knocked him unconscious with a roundhouse to his head, the roll of quarters I had in my hand helped. The other three looked at me in shock before one of them headbutted the girl stunning her. The first one just stood in front of me while the second moved behind me. The one in front attempted a seriously sloppy kick, which I easily caught. Bringing my elbow down on his knee, I came pretty close to dislocating it, at least I hoped I did. Howling in pain the trucker fell to the ground, clutching his leg. The second then grabbed me from behind in a bear hug. The other got back up and in front, rubbing his fist. When he raised it and swung I ducked and his fist sailed straight into the other guys face. The one holding me dropped me on the ground and I swept him sending him tumbling to the ground.
Getting back up I turned just as the last one delivered a hard punch, giving me a nice shiner I'm sure. I didn't deal with the last guy. The biker girl had come to her senses and kicked his knee sending him down before kneeing him right in the face. Pretty sure his nose was broken. "Thanks." she said helping me up. "Lets get inside before they get back up." and with that she pretty much dragged me back into the diner. Thankfully my backpack was still in the booth, on the plus side I could see my handiwork as the truckers outside were rolling around in pain. "Where did you learn to fight like that?" she asked as the waitress came out from behind the counter.
"My parents, mom mostly." I said. "And your father?" she asked. "Gone most of the time, working for some pharmaceutical company, did learn some stuff from him." I replied.
"What can I get you dears?" the waitress asked when she got to us. "And since you taught those morons out there a lesson, whatever you order is on the house." Producing two menu's she handed them to us. Skimming through the menu it was pretty much your standard american diner menu. Right now after delivering a serious beating I just wanted to sit down, drink coffee and eat a slice of pie. I must have said that out loud cause the waitress nodded and wrote it down on her notepad. The girl ordered the same and the waitress left for the kitchen. "Thanks for standing up to those guys back there." she said leaning on the table with her forearms. "Well given how well you broke the last guy's nose, I'm sure if they hadn't blindsided you they'd be in serious pain." I replied, to which she chuckled lightly and said "I'm Claire Redfield what's your name?" "I'm Josh." I replied. "Just Josh?" she inquired.
"I'd rather not talk about that right now." I said. "Fair enough." she said "So who taught you?" I asked. "My older brother." she said her expression becoming downcast. "He's the whole reason I'm out here." she continued. Whether consciously or unconsciously, my hand went to the two pairs of dog tags around my neck. Claire looked at them and asked "Your parents?" to which I said "Yeah." solemnly. "By the way" she said "what were you doing all the way out here? You don't look old enough to be on your own."
Not really wanting to look at her as I explained I lowered my head and replied "After my mom died I was taken in by the foster care system, because my dad was overseas at the time he didn't really have any say in it. A lot of families tried to take me in, but I guess I'm too much like my dad." A small smile began to form. "How so?" she asked. "My mom used to say I inherited my dad's stubbornness. The families that did try to take me in, well it varies, some sent me back in a heartbeat, others actually tried to adopt me. The former more so than the latter. After a while I just got fed up, left and well here we are." I finished now looking out the diner window.
Claire put her hand on my shoulder and smiled. Getting up she waved to the waitress, we got our check and headed out of the restaurant. Seconds later we were flying down the empty road towards the horizon.
What we could never have imagined...was...our next stop was the beginning...of our decent into hell.
